Retired factory hand and loyal union member deeply concerned about the direction our country has taken especially under the Bush administration but even before where the quality of life for working people as it relates to income relative to spending power is concerned. The loss of work out of the country, declining wages, militarism, lending practices, all these trouble me.
I worry about the world my generation is leaving for my grandson and your grandchildren.
I read and spend time with my dog. She and I are the best buddies.

I'm just glad Hy-Vee's on top of this thing with healthful produce.

Twenty Six - If they got the principals to the controversy in NYC together to hammer out a compromise, I think the rest of us could live with their agreement. For me the feelings aren't quite as intense as yours, but it was an incredible crime, and people who feel the way you do should be taken into account, most especially those in NYC who have a perspective that should give them a special voice. They need to get the community of mourners to agree on a spokesperson(s) who can meet with city officials and the folks behind the building of the Islamic structure. But the attack on Braley is propaganda.

Twenty-Six - Thank you kindly. Surely in this sensitive atmosphere anyone not wanting to provoke but to work for a kind of reconciliation even with the association to 9/11 'weak' and one that makes the feeling against the building look like Islamophobia or bigotry would not WANT to build where one is confronted with an outcry. I want world peace. I'd like to think Muslims of good faith do also.

We have neighbor kids who likely think we are an unfriendly old pair, but they mess with the gate which is secured with a lock, and this story is one good reason to lock your gate. I'm glad the dog got back to its owner.
Patriot said: "Braley is a sleazeball who refuses to answer direct questions. i have asked him repeatedly abot his personal stance on his family becoming covered by Obamacare and he has skirted the question each time. He has publicly stated the coverage will be good for the Country but refuses to address his choice since he also voted to allow congressmen to opt out of the coverage."
Have you put the same questions to YOUR candidate?

The important point to me is that what Braley said about it's being a zoning matter for New Yorkers does not constitute 'support.' Personally, I marvel that the group behind the building does not see the wisdom in letting time heal the wounds that the building near Ground Zero reopens. It is kind of like the use of immersion v. systematic desensitization in 'curing' a phobia. In immersion you expose the phobic person to the feared object and hope for the best. In systematic desensitization the phobic person is exposed gradually in incremental doses to the feared object. These people are underestimating the hurt felt by the American people over this attack on our soil IMO and would be wiser to consider 'systematic desensitization.' They should build at a respectful distance.

Maybe that's what I needed. I might have turned in the many assignments that were never completed. I don't know, though, I think I'd prefer the beating to an oral report.

Forty-sixth has been closed to traffic for a while for construction and a planter is at least part of the project but not one of the vision-obstructing ones. Still you wonder, for what? I like to drive pretty streets and I appreciate the beauty of flowers, but the potholes of a couple years ago cost me a set of tires and damaged my rims. I'd rather see the money go into resurfacing some of the bad streets. And going east on 53rd I've been held up in traffic waiting behind tank trucks watering these flower beds. This is another drawback for River Drive traffic and additional expense for maintenance. Other than these reservations and the roll-over danger created by the ramp-like slopes downtown, I await what will surely be an improvement if not to traffic flow to the eye with the time to appreciate. And where will the snow plows push the snow? I swear.

I've been wondering for quite a while what purpose these things will serve. Is it cheaper to build these than resurface? It seems like they create problems for traffic when we go down to the farmers' market. Are they financed by federal money? What's the scoop, Barb? I'm with you that they're going to look nice but at what cost in terms of what goes undone and in terms of issues such as the reduced vision which you noticed and impairment of traffic flow which I've encountered?
