‘Mamma Mia’ at the Oscars
Posted by: Stephanie De Pasquale on February 23, 2009 at 4:58PM CST

I love watching the Oscars, and I have to agree with host Hugh Jackman’s statement that the musical is back. But did he have to illustrate his point by referencing “Mamma Mia!”?
Yes, Meryl Streep was in it. Yes, she was nominated for best supporting actress, but it certainly wasn’t for her performance in the movie version of the popular musical.

I watched the movie last week, and while I usually love any production that involves singing and dancing, I thought the only thing worse than “Mamma Mia” was having ABBA’s “Dancing Queen” stuck in my head the next day.

I also thought the Oscars montage of musicals that have gained fame throughout the years was a little much.

There was so much going on that you hardly noticed the younger stars (who could pull off the skimpy costumes) from “Mamma Mia” and “High School Musical” when they joined Beyonce and Jackman onstage.

There’s quite a discussion about the Oscars going on at the Quadsville Council. You can chime in on the discussion thread under by clicking here.

Oh I didn't think Mamma Mia was that bad. Christine Baranski is fun. Meryl Streep surprised the heck out of me. Who knew she could move that way.

I had a hard time watching Pierce Bronson sing his song though. Not his forte...and Colin Firth's character ending up gay just didn't sit well for me. He'll always be my Mr. Darcy, and Mr. Darcy is not gay!

The younger people...the girl is absolutely beautiful and I really like the dance number on the pier with the guys.

Haha. Thanks for putting up that video. I'm gonna sip my coffee and watch it one more time.

The pier dance was funny, but as a former swimmer, I'm not sure how they pulled off dancing in flippers, it's hard enough to walk in those things.

And the young girl, Amanda Seyfried, was the only part I really liked about the movie. Although I was already a fan of hers from watching "Big Love" on HBO. I never thought I'd find a show about polygamy so interesting.

Gotta chime in. My 2-year-old daughter and I are in LOVE with the Mama Mia movie (for the name alone, probably!). We sing the songs together. We were just singing "Don't go wasting your emotions ... lay all your love on me!" this morning as I buckled her into her carseat! We like the music.

BUT ... I have to agree with Stephanie. Meryl Streep wasn't the best in that movie. And I also had a hard time taking some of that singing seriously. My favorite scene also is the one on the beach, with the people dancing in flippers.

We'll keep watching it, but it's only for our silly singing enjoyment. Not because it had stellar acting in it.

My husband and I watch Big Love the first two seasons then we just sort of stopped. I thought it was interesting too. My husband was like, why in the world would a guy want more than ONE wife...the guy was so stressed. Don't know if his life has gotten better or not.

Oh it's gotten more stressful for sure. Bill took a fourth wife two weeks ago and then the fourth wife divorced them all in the same episode because them other three wives were all jockeying to maintain their current positions. It's a crazy show, but I'm hooked.
