Puddle of Mudd frontman Wesley Scantlin on illegal downloads: "I think anybody that steals anything is kind of a joke. I don't steal anything from anybody. I've never stolen a record in my life. I guess if people want to be chumps and steal records, go ahead. But if you want to be a real cool person, go out and buy it. Because we spend a lot of time working on it in the studio. The songs just don't arrive from God. Well, they kind of sorta do arrive from God. But anyway, we have to really work and do the work in the studio to make the music happen, and if people dig and they want to listen to it, then they should at least buy it." Thursday June 18, 2009

The management at RIBCO has announced the details of the 30th anniversary celebration for the well-known downtown Rock Island nightspot. Einstein's Sister, Tripmaster Monkey and Driver of the Year all will reunite to play during the two-night celebration July 31 and Aug. 1. Driver of the Year's original lineup hasn't played together in three years, but singer and piano player Jason Parris, who also handles booking for the Rock Island Brewing Company, is excited about the getting the band back together for one last show. "I think it's going to be awesome," said Parris, who toured the country several times with Driver of the Year before the band broke up under good terms so its members could pursue other interests. "RIBCO gave us our start, and really we've been pretty loyal to the club since day one. So we just thought that it'd be a nice recap and maybe a nice ending to Driver of the Year." Along with a reunion of RIBCO favorites of old, current Quad-City favorites Keep Off the Grass, Bumper Crop and Cheese Pizza all will perform during the two-night event. Parris is trying as well to add a rockabilly group and a blues combo to the 30th-anniversary lineup. "I wanted to have the biggest bands that I could get together from the past, the present, and I want to throw in some future bands that I think are going to shake up this area or have the potential to do something a little bit bigger than just a bar band." A cover charge will be in effect for the 30th anniversary celebration. Each night will be $5, which is a low price for the number of bands booked, especially with Saturday, Aug. 1, scheduled as an all-ages outdoor show. "I basically want to keep the price down low enough where anyone and everyone paying the cover will have at least one band that they're really into and have some past with," Parris said. "We want to give back to the fans that have supported RIBCO for the past 30 years."

I forgot to post this on Tuesday. Here's the account of my flying adventure. Monday June 8, 2009

So, I’m set to go up on the high wires at Circa ‘21 during the theater’s media day for its upcoming musical “Peter Pan.”
I did really well last week at sticking to a low-calorie diet, but then I went to a bridal shower over the weekend that my aunt threw for me. My aunt is a master baker and she filled her dining room table with tasty baked treats that definitely were not low-fat but were oh-so-delicious. I at least managed to maintain my weight over the weekend, but still have one pound left to lose in order to make the weight requirement for the high wires. My plan is to drink less water today and exercise in heavy sweats tonight so I can sweat out as much water weight as possible and hopefully lose the last pound that way. I do promise to rehydrate as soon as the flight is over. But look for some hilarious video on http://www.qctimes.tv/ on Tuesday night. We’re planning to have a Stephanie-cam and a David-cam. (David Burke, the Quad-City Times entertainment editor, will be filming the hilarity from the ground.) Friday June 5, 2009

Over the past couple of weeks, I've talked with multiple bands and artists who are going back to producing music on vinyl and even cassette tapes. Area musician Dennis Hockaday, the man behind Id Pyramid, just released his first EP, "Faux Futures," on cassette. Hockaday said he's sick of the digital format and that being able to skip through songs on mp3 players gives him and others a kind of musical attention deficit disorder. Chris Ward from Pattern is Movement recorded and mixed their latest album, "All Together," completely on tape. The album is available on CD, but Ward said the sound is best on vinyl. Pattern is Movement must be doing something right, though, because "All Together" was reviewed favorably by Pitchfork and Spin magazines. That said, Ward loves his iPod and doesn't think Pattern is Movement - which plays an amalgam of ‘90s hip-hop and show tunes - would be possible without the technology. "I think iPods have helped create the music that I'm making today," he said. "Music that has a myriad of different influences, it has definitely helped having an iPod because you just click and have all this music stored and can listen to it as much as you want. "It creates this cross-pollination of music that is amazing and really inspires both (bandmate) Andrew (Thiboldeaux) and I." Ward also thinks another draw of vinyl is that having the physical record in your hand helps create a tangible memory of a show. I got a turntable for Christmas and inherited my parents' and grandparents' record collection that I'm slowly making my way through. I've also bought some new albums on vinyl, like Duffy's "Rockferry" and Amy Winehouse's "Back to Black." But when I'm working out or driving in the car, my iPod is a must. What medium do you prefer for your listening pleasures? Monday June 1, 2009

So, in my last column I revealed that I was 128 pounds and needed to lose three pounds in order to meet the weight requirement before going up on wires for a media day of sorts that has been scheduled for the upcoming production of "Peter Pan" at Circa ‘21 Dinner Playhouse in Rock Island. Well, when I got on the scale the next morning, I found out I really needed to lose five pounds. So, I went to the grocery store and bought a bunch of fruit, rice cakes and other healthy items, and I resurrected my www.tweetwhatyoueat.com diary. Tweet what you eat, or @twye for the Twitter-lingual, has served as my conscience. All you need is a Twitter account to use the Web site, and it's really easy. Whenever you eat something, you just send a direct message to @twye and it logs your food for you. There is even a crowd portions option where the Web site will fill in the calorie content of the food you just ate and does all the calorie-counting for you. And since you're sending the message direct to @twye, the messages are private, so nobody will see that you just fell off the bandwagon and ate three doughnuts for breakfast. @twye helped me realize I had been eating about 2,500 calories a day, which is more than twice the 1,190 I should be eating to lose weight. Thankfully, by drinking lots of water and replacing high-calorie foods, such as mounds of chocolate, with low-calorie, yet filling options such as fresh vegetables, I've cut my daily calorie intake in half without feeling hungry. Combine that with actually getting my rear end to the gym to exercise and eating a few prunes a day to make sure everything I eat departs in a timely manner, I've managed to lose three pounds since Friday morning. Now I just have two more pounds to lose in the coming week in order to make the weight requirement so I can fly like Peter Pan. Quadsville's Mayor Melissa and I are going to run the Brady Street hill a few times Tuesday night. All runners are welcome. We'll meet by the train bridge at 6 p.m. |
