What do you do with your parents' "stuff"?
Posted by: Stephanie De Pasquale at 2:31PM CST on February 8, 2010
I'm working on a story about what to do with your parents' or grandparents' "stuff" when they pass away or downsize to move from their house into a rental property, or even assisted living or a nursing home.

My mom collects cookie jars. She probably has at least 40 of them. And while it hopefully will be a very long time before my sister and I have to decide what to do with them, I have no idea what we're going to do when the time comes. My mom, who has a huge kitchen, doesn't even have room to display them all at once. And, really, what can you do with dozens of ceramic cookie jars? But I'm sure we'd feel horrible if we got rid of mom's cookie jars.

My grandmother collects Hummels, and I'm sure each one will find a home with one of the five female descendants, but I also can envision some disagreements over who gets which figurine since dibs have already been placed on some. Her collection of cow figurines might be easier to part with, however.

I'm reading "The Master Quilter" by Jennifer Chiaverini. In the book, Agnes, a quilter in her 70s, pins the names of her family and friends to the quilts she's made over the years and makes a list of which possessions will go to what family member or friend after her daughters refuse to tell her what items they'd like because they find the process morbid. Agnes' hope is that by making the decision for them, nobody will argue over who gets what when she's gone.

Those of you who have had to go through the homes of loved ones and decide what to keep, sell, toss or give away, how did you make the decision? Did you get rid of something you later wished you would had kept? Did the process create an argument in the family? And did anyone's parents or grandparents have a collection of items, such as my mother's cookie jars, that you couldn't part with for sentimental reasons, but had no idea what do with it?
