Posted by: Stephanie De Pasquale at 11:57AM CST on February 27, 2009

Marty “M.J. Heat” Jones’ noise act X+X is a tamer version of noise than most, preferring to perform songs that have a melody and directions.

At the Go&Do Live Sessions X+X performed “Radio Groove,” “Military,” “Cowboy Swallow” and “Sneak-a-Peak.” For a full story on X+X that was published in the Go&Do section of the Quad-City Times, click here.

Posted by: Stephanie De Pasquale at 5:54PM CST on February 25, 2009

Park Lane
has been together for three years and released a self-titled CD in 2006.

The band has written enough material for a sophomore album and is planning to begin recording it in the spring.

When Park Lane performs at area bars, the band plays a mix of hard rock covers and originals, but at the Go&Do Live Sessions, the band played all originals, including “Black & Gold,” “Companion,” “Life, Love, Faith,” “I Am Calling,” “Feel Like Before,” “Broken,” “Always There” and “Close to You.”

‘Mamma Mia’ at the Oscars
Posted by: Stephanie De Pasquale at 4:58PM CST on February 23, 2009

I love watching the Oscars, and I have to agree with host Hugh Jackman’s statement that the musical is back. But did he have to illustrate his point by referencing “Mamma Mia!”?
Yes, Meryl Streep was in it. Yes, she was nominated for best supporting actress, but it certainly wasn’t for her performance in the movie version of the popular musical.

I watched the movie last week, and while I usually love any production that involves singing and dancing, I thought the only thing worse than “Mamma Mia” was having ABBA’s “Dancing Queen” stuck in my head the next day.

I also thought the Oscars montage of musicals that have gained fame throughout the years was a little much.

There was so much going on that you hardly noticed the younger stars (who could pull off the skimpy costumes) from “Mamma Mia” and “High School Musical” when they joined Beyonce and Jackman onstage.

There’s quite a discussion about the Oscars going on at the Quadsville Council. You can chime in on the discussion thread under by clicking here.

Posted by: Stephanie De Pasquale at 9:06PM CST on February 14, 2009

Jim Ryan usually plays solo, but performed with his wife for the first time at the Go&Do Live Sessions. Bringing her in on the songs was appropriate since most of them were inspired by her in the first place.

What are your Valentine’s Day plans?
Posted by: Stephanie De Pasquale at 3:47PM CST on February 10, 2009
I’m working on a story right now about how busy restaurants predict they’ll be on Valentine’s Day since it falls on a Saturday this year.

My fiance has Friday night off, but not Saturday. However, I still doubt we’re going to do anything special. Our birthdays are in December and January, and when you combine that with the holidays, I think we’ve both probably spent more than enough over the past three months.

We’ll probably cook a meal at home and maybe head to the pet store to get a name tag for our new dog. Beyond that I don’t think we’ll do anything special in terms of going out.

What are you all doing? Have you had reservations for weeks or are you completely avoiding restaurants altogether? And is anyone else celebrating on Friday to avoid the Valentine’s Day rush?

Cheap date?
Posted by: Stephanie De Pasquale at 5:58PM CST on February 4, 2009
No, I’m not talking about women who can’t hold their liquor. I’m looking for the places you all go to have a good time without spending a lot of cash.

I already write a feature called $10 or less that features restaurants where you can eat a meal for under $10 a person. But where do you all go for entertainment to enjoy a night out for less than $10? And as long as I mentioned liquor, what is the best drink special you’ve found in the Quad-Cities?

He said what?

Benjamin Taylor, the only son of music megastars James Taylor and Carly Simon, had been billed simply as Ben Taylor for his first four albums, but he went to the long version of his name for the fifth, “The Legend of Kung Folk, Part One (The Killing Bite).”

“I feel like I’m growing up quick and I might as well use all the syllables I’ve been given,” Taylor, 32, said.

Moral Belief Go&Do Live Session
Posted by: Stephanie De Pasquale at 11:24AM CST on February 4, 2009

Moral Belief
likes to have fun with their song titles. One they named “Stephanie’s Song” the night of the Go&Do Live Sessions because I couldn’t come up with a suggestion for them. They have another song called “Santapocolypse,” which is about a theory that the apocalypse will come just before Christmas on 2012.

The other songs Moral Belief performed were “Lolly Pop Soap Bars,” “Continental Breakfast,” “Roundhouse Kick to the Face” and “Dogs Can Grow Beards All Over.”
