Last night was a busy one for police, medics, and firefighters.
There were shots fired near the Kwik Shop at Locust and Harrison, involving Phillip Bogan, who you may remember was charged in connection with the shooting on East 14th back in May. It sounded like he wasn't the shooter, but may have been the target. I think it really is about 1% of Davenport's population that both causes , and is victimized by, 90% of our violent crime. Nobody got shot, but I don't believe the shooter was caught either.
Then later this morning there was a car-motorcycle collision near Menards, which didn't sound too good for somebody. When the cops call out the accident investigation team right away, its never a good sign. Welcome Way was also closed for a while.
Less than an hour after that there was a head on collision in front of Sudlow on Locust, with at least 3 people injured. There were also some other medical calls around that time, so even though 4-5am is usually a quiet time for firefighters, I think quite a few of our companies were out on EMS calls. It will also be interesting to find out later if alcohol was a factor in either or both of these accidents.
Hopefully all the injured are ok, and thanks as always to our first responders.
Also: My Jeff Speck article is delayed again, but Pioneer98 has a post about it here.

--That'd be about 900 people, which sounds in the ballpark to me.
I wonder what sort of strategies are targeting this crowd (I'm sure the police have a strategy, but I've not heard it); anyone know?
(There were 6 or 7 shots fired, in two groups, w/ about 15 minutes between them. It sounded like someone unloaded and set off a chase resulting in the second group of shots.)

What ever happened to a good ol' fashioned fist fight to settle your differences? What these dopes need is a few lessons on how to become "real" men. Sure do hope that the Davenport Police can track em' down.
That brings to mind the thought: why don't they just get jobs? Then they'd be as busy as the rest of us (too busy for hanging around waiting for a blow-up).
Then it occurred to me that Dav, alone, had an unemployment rate of 3.7% last yr: that's 3600 folks.
There aren't that many open positions around here, if they "all got jobs."
(of course, it costs the rest of us 30,000/yr to lock each of these knuckleheads up.....)

Renko, they don't get jobs for a variety of reasons. One being they don't WANT a job, they want their freedom to lull around, gangbang it, etc. They are too cool work anyplace but "management". I know, I ran a jobs program and I heard it over and over. I'm too good for this job. The other reason is even simpler, NO ONE WILL hire them. Criminal records do not make for a good hire. It's a fact. They set their lives in motion early on..and they father kids (and mother) with the same "goals" for the most part. It isn't getting better.
RCR, I'm not discounting your argument. I suspect it close to the mark, certainly the part about nobody hiring them. The inevitable conclusion, then, is there is no solution possible.
But is this what America has become? Like the oncologist who refuses to treat lung cancer in a long-term smoker because he created his own problem? The patient didn't WANT to be healthy, he wanted his freedom to smoke and that relieves me of any responsiblity for the problem.
If that is indeed what we've become, the failing economy, the crumbling infrastructure, the "loss of face" by the US in the world won't really matter, will it? Our ultimate failure as a nation is assured.
Guess that is what we've become, for many. We live in a graceless age of me-me-me mindsets. The ultra-liberal movement created this mess, I do believe it to be so. That is the only explanation. Our acceptance, blindly often, of "anything goes" as long as it doesn't affect me mentality is a culprit too.
Many sociologist believe our downfall is looming unless we do something drastic. I don't hear anything from our "candidates" about these very problems we face.
