Don't forget: Jeff Speck at the Figge tonight
Posted by: QuadCityImages on August 14, 2008 at 8:08AM EST
Here's a quick article about it in the QCTimes.

Doors open and (I believe) appetizers at 5:30, with the actual presentation at 6.

I was able to spend some time with Jeff Tuesday night, and I'm interested to see what recommendations he can come up with for downtown Davenport. Like many outsiders, he seems to see that we have potential more than some of our residents can see. I also heard that the Smashing Pumpkins' Billy Corgan thought Davenport was a neat town. Now we just have to convince the vocal minority of Davenporters who hate their city.

Just because people complain about what they perceive is wrong with our fair city, doesn't mean that they hate it....

The topic of "naysayers" came up in both my interviews with Speck and Mayor Gluba. It's always an interesting debate about what constitutes "constructive criticism" and what constitutes C.A.V.E. (citizens against virtually everything) mentality.

A couple quotes that didn't get in, due to space constraints:

SPECK: "All you need to counter naysayers is a bunch of people willing to work to get things done, and you have that here. It's wonderful to go to a place where, when people talk about sprawl, they can only point to one place, which is the 53rd Street corridor. Davenport feels like the real downtown of the Quad-Cities, adn that has to be reinforced."
