Keep me honest, Quadsville
Posted by: Mayor Melissa on January 8, 2009 at 3:03PM CST
I have sorely neglected my personal blog since I started doing daily Council Bulletins. Not sure that you all need to see my mug pop up in the latest post streams THAT much, but perhaps I should make a New Year's resolution to write a personal blog at least twice a week. Think that's overkill with all the other spots I pop up in here in Quadsville?

I'm really tempted to make a fitness-related New Year's resolution, but those always seem to result in FAIL by about March. I just got the group class schedule for the Davenport YMCA from Kay Luna. We are both intrigued by the Zumba class that our coworker Deirdre Baker tried out a couple weeks ago.

I definitely need to mix some classes into my workout routine. Right now, I'm getting back into running in the cardio center and doing some assisted pull-ups and dips with the Nautilus machine. Stretching is always a part of my workout, too. I've take one Body Pump class and enjoyed it. So I think I need to start doing that once a week or so.

I'm also considering trying out some yoga and Pilates classes. I've never done Pilates. I have done yoga on my own, but (sadly) not for awhile.

What classes do you like at the Y? What should I try? I'm not at all looking to build up muscles, just to tone them and slim down a bit. I'd also like to run the Bix in 70 minutes. A 10-minute mile doesn't sound so very difficult, does it? But for some reason, I am constantly stuck at 11.

So there. I've stated some goals in public and you can all harass me if I start to slack off. I'm going to try to work out three times a week and run the Bix in 70. Hold my feet to the fire. Or to the pavement. :-)

I went for a yoga class at the Y one evening and the instructor wasn't there , so I took a Pilates class. As a pudgy, pasty, stiff-jointed, middle aged male I'm sure I looked pretty stupid in some of the exercises, but the instructor was very positive and able to keep a straight face.
It was pretty tough. I guess it is focused on "core" strengthening, and would probably be very good for the abdominal and back muscles.
I'm going to try to take a course regularly this winter.

I'm glad you linked to failblog. I IMPLORE everybody to visit the website and watch 2 videos that were on the front page as of early afternoon today. The pen trick is great, but the funniest video has to be the jumping jacks fail. It gets funnier and funnier every time you watch it. My wife and I have watched it about 20 times now and we still end up in tears from laughing so hard. Almost every single person in that video has no idea how to do jumping jacks. Especially pay attention to ballerina guy and dancing guy on the right hand side.

Oh man, the jumping jacks were fabulous. hahaha
Jenius - I could use both ab and back strength, so looking forward to trying out Pilates!

Boot Camp, Step Aerobics, Circuit Training, Pilates...they're all fun! If you don't feel like heading to the gym if the weather is bad, try FitTV (Mediacom channel 77). Cathe Friedrich is my favorite! She's on at 6 am, 10 am and 6 pm.

I heard about laughter yoga at the Y ... I wanted to try that! Sounds like a lot of fun! =)

Pilates is pretty cool ... for me it depends on my mood. Sometimes I just get bored with it, but other days it's nice to take a break from the hard core stuff like running.

But Melissa, the fact that you usually make it to March is still impressive. Normally I don't even make it the first day. ;) Although I do my push-ups and crunches every morning. Yay.

There is a new fitness class being launch on Saturday at the Bett Y. I can't remember the name of it but the childcare is staying open later than usual to accomodate the class.

Try a water class. They are great for the joints. I use to teach them...and since I stopped I promised I'd keep going but I haven't.

Karla, thanks for the recommendations. I don't have cable anymore, but I used to do the "Inhale" yoga class on Oxygen when I was working off the baby weight when Gwen was born.
Teen, laughter yoga does sound like fun. I'm impressed that you do daily crunches. I need to start using my AbSwing again!
