4 miles in 44 minutes
Posted by: Mayor Melissa on January 12, 2009 at 9:48PM CST
So far, so good on the fitness goals. I made it to the Y three times last week, and I'm off to a good start this week.

I have been running on the treadmills all month, but today, the cardio room was packed with all the treadmills booked for an hour or more. So, I warmed up for 10 minutes on one of the exercise bikes, stretched and hit the track.

I had one of the best runs of my life. I ran four miles in 44 minutes. That's one minute off my 10-minute mile goal for Bix and a minute, on average, faster per mile than I usually run when there's not a moving belt underneath me. I felt great the whole time, and I'm hoping I can get whatever magic happened today to happen at least once a week.

I have a theory that soy milk is my secret weapon. I was out of regular milk this morning, so I used the Very Vanilla soy milk (normally reserved for my coffee) instead. Usually, if all I eat for breakfast is a bowl of cereal, I'm starving by 10 a.m. But today, I didn't even get to think about lunch until 2:30 and I was fine. I'm going to keep up this cereal and soy milk thing and see if it really is the wonder food it appears to be. Even if it's not, it's probably better for me than the egg and cheese sandwich I usually fix in the morning.

How's your training coming along? Anyone else out there bothering with resolutions? And if you are, have you managed to keep them so far?

Try almond milk instead of soy milk.

Some days you'll feel like that. The next time you try that pace, you might only make it 2 miles. :)

I've only run like that twice, right before and right after the Bix. The first time I ran the middle five miles of the Bix in something like 51:30 and was stoked. Then right after I ran four miles in 40 minutes. However on race day I ran 11:30 miles. I just wish I could make the magic happen when I wanted to.

What time are you going running on Wednesday. I'm serious about joining you, especially after my cookie weakness on Sunday.

Good for you. Do you listen to anything while you run? I've never been a runner and hated cardio stuff, but I've been trying lately on the various machines at the Y, listening to podcasts of "Wait Wait Don't Tell Me", among other things, to help the time pass. (I'm sure a "real" runner would not need the diversion).

On a somewhat related note, I watched a movie the other day called "Run, Fat Boy, Run". Totally unrealistic and predictable, but very funny if you enjoy the British brand of humor.

I'm not running with headphones at the moment. My MP3 player shot craps while I was in Austria. But I did have songs running through my head that were all at a good running pace. Running also becomes my day dreaming time when I can just let my mind wander to various things I'm pondering.
Taking the day off today. Back at it tomorrow.

Jenius, does that film star the actor(s?) from Shaun of the Dead?

I often sprinted in to work from the parking lot at the last minute. In fact, I deserve a tee shirt like the ones they give you for running in marathons for the miles I surely accumulated over the many years. Somehow exercise at work just doesn't leave you feeling physically benefited though the rewards to your finances are a pleasure to accrue and do a lot for your emotional well-being. I've got to start going and taking my grandson to use the pool to teach him how to swim. (Granpa Joe drowned when the boat from which he was fishing tipped him into the Mississippi.)

Reuther - I need to get my little one signed up for swimming lessons, too. She's such a natural water bug, unlike me. I can swim, thanks to two summers of Girl Scout swim camp and a few YMCA lessons. But I'm not a very strong swimmer.
Matt - I love "Shaun of the Dead!!!!"

Matt - I haven't seen "Shaun of the Dead" ,but Simon Pegg stars in both.
I'll have to give it a try.

I've seen "Shaun of the Dead" but not "Run, Fat Boy Run." I recommend "Hot Fuzz." It has the same cast of characters and is a spoof on cop dramas. Very funny.

Ive been able to make it to the Y about 4 or 5 times a week now. Its great I feel soooo good while Im running and biking. My hub bub got me a new MP3 player for Christmas so that goes with me....I ahve also kicked caffiene and have been withdraw free for a few days now. Lemme tell ya, it is soooo weird running on raw energy but I feel better and get to bed when I should now....next habit to kick is the smoking...

The resolution aspect I've gone through many decades worth. This year my resolution(s) are to try to get stronger, to alter all the clothing I need to and whatever is too much hassle to just give them away. I've resolved to put up plastic earlier this year before winter as well. ---When I lived across the street from the "Y" I would go almost daily, using the machines made exercising much easier for me. None of those I used were any I'd have to be on the ground for. I could also chose which machines to use, depending on how I was feeling that day. I miss my exercise machine time as well as my 4:00am walks. I'd walk about 6 blocks one direction and then head back home on a different route, sometimes it was more than 6 blocks and sometimes not. The feeling of exertion which is caused by exercising can't be compared with anything else.
