Drop a line to the troops
Posted by: Melissa C at 2:55PM CST on November 26, 2008
I just got an e-mail encouraging me to send a holiday card to "A Recovering Soldier" at Walter Reed Hospital. I posted the info here before a colleague reminded me that since 9/11, it is no longer possible to send mail to an unspecified member of the armed forces. You can still get your greetings through to our men and women in uniform, even if you don't have a name to put in the address. Lucky for us, Times reporter Alma Gaul wrote about this just a few days ago (where was I?).

Click here to read her story and then send off a thank you note or holiday greeting to one of our warriors.

VETERAN'S DAY 2008 AND OUR PART IN IT
Posted by: John Moeller at 12:52PM CST on November 8, 2008

What are your thoughts about War and Peace....is it  Peace at any  price or, Peace through strength? Does the world  hold us guilty  by the actions of a few dishonorable deeds of our warriors, or do  they reason all Americans aren't  mean  and stupid? In the next four years we will expect Iraq  to take a lesser part in our national news, but what do we  do in Afghanistan and Pakistan except  look for, capture and kill bin Laden?  The Soviet  Union played the game of fighting in that nation  and left many years ago. Now  we are  scouting the mountains  for a man with a price on his head.  I ask  what do we do about the poppy fields in Afghanistan/? Do we let them  grow  so the by-products  will someday wind up on the streets of  the Quad Cities?  Do we  teach the populace  how to grow different crops and and  market them  through the  year rather than seasonally, and then buy them back from Pakistan at inflated prices when they need them out of season?  When do we run  home and say, "That's not our problem?

I believe what got us into the Iraq  situation was  the United Nations sitting  on their hands instead  of sending in UN TROOPS to make Iraq honor  their thoughts. We see the same problem in Iran with thier qwest for a nuclear weapon. If they were looking for a nuclear power reactor  for electricity there is a much more reasonable way to acheive the power they need to improve their economy, and the world  leaders kn ow it.

If you wish to not  answer  these questions and you have  served in the Armed Forces of our Nation....WE THANK YOU!
