Weekend Poll: What are your Mississippi River flood predictions for spring?
Posted by: Melissa C on March 5, 2010 at 11:40AM CST
So much depends on the next two months and how quickly temperatures rise. Flood forecasts issued a few weeks ago put the chance of minor flooding at 90% and the likelihood of a major flood at 40%. But the weather lately has been encouraging. Temps just above freezing during the day are allowing snow to melt slowly, then nighttime temps below 32 degrees stop the flow, allowing water to run off a little at a time.

If we can keep this up and avoid last spring's heavy rains, we might dodge the bullet. What do you think? Are we going to flood? Is it going to be another big one?

BTW, you can keep an eye on river levels and forecasts here.

May it never come up as it did in 1965. I had friends who lived in a house on a considerable rise on S. Concord overlooking the river, and it inundated the house. He had built it with his own hands and retired to fish for income to supplement his pension. When it receded the river left inside the house a ton of what it carries to the Gulf. The place was full of mud, a terrible mess.

You've got me dreaming about flooding. Lately I've been recalling my dreams and they're the usual stuff, esp. work dreams where a machine is acting up, but this was a flood dream.

A highway was blockaded and traffic stopped. Up ahead you could see a river was flowing over the road. I'm thinking this image comes from the video you guys offered of the Cedar flowing over I-80.

There was more to the dream but based on this I'm going to have to revise from moderate to major or something in between.
