Town Crier? Citizen? What the heck are these points?

Several people have asked me what's with the little badges on their profiles that designate them as Newcomer, Citizen or Town Crier.

Good question.

This is part of a karma system that was recently launched. You earn 1-10 points for a variety of contributions to our online community. For example, you get a point for uploading a photo or writing a comment on qctimes.com. You get 5 points for writing a comment on Quadsville. You get 10 for writing a blog entry.

The current parameters are:

0-249 points = Newcomer

250-749 = Citizen

750-infinity = Town Crier

When you go to My Stuff, you'll see your badge and a link underneath to view points. Right now, these badges aren't visible to others. But eventually they will be and other activities will be included in the karma system.

Since we are still sort of testing this out, let me know what you think. Are the point values for each level fair? It seems to me people can get up to Town Crier pretty quickly. I have more than 7,000 points for goodness sake. Should we raise the number of points needed to get to each level?

Well, if I understand the system correctly, this comment will officially put me into the Town Crier level.

I'd agree, that seems a little low. While I do post from time to time I am no where near the level of many others. I'd leave the Newcomer where it is and put Town Crier up to 1000.

What about a next level?

Something that shows ownership or officer?

Some incentive for those of us who are on regularly.
Proprietor? Alderman or alternate term? Of course these are ambiguous.

Maybe those with high points can automatically (system) be assigned Quadsville officers - a governing body. What tweaks should be considered.

Yeoman? Purser? Assayer?

I have two ideas on this issue:

1) Raise the Town Crier level to 1500 points

2) Reward those who reach certain point levels, maybe every 2000-3000 points.

Just my 2 cents worth.

Town crier is a little like those guys I used to see by the Boston Common on a soapbox surrounded by a crowd of hecklers?
