Question of the Day: Which rude behavior really ticks you off?
Posted by: Melissa C on October 20, 2009 at 1:35PM CST
Kay Luna's Tuesday story, "Where did good manners go?" explored what some people - well, 75 percent of Americans, according to one poll - believe is a trend toward greater rudeness in this country. Some people say it's because we're so overscheduled, there's no time for manners. Others blame the increase in virtual communication that makes it easier to behave badly (we've NEVER seen any of that here in Quadsville, have we?). ;-)

So what's your pet peeve when it comes to rude behavior? Take the poll and let the airing of grievances begin in the comments.

Hmm. This is a tough question. The only thing I can think of right now, and it really isn't rude behavior, but is a big pet peeve are poky drivers. I cannot stand driving behind slow people on the road.

I'll think some more on this and see if I can figure out my biggest rude behavior pet peeve.

Because I'm the health reporter, I voted on Sandy the Sneezer. I better step up for folks who believe in "good cough etiquette" which means to cover your coughs and sneezes into your arm, and then washing hands, of course. But I also hate getting cut off in traffic, or Hot Wheels Harry. I'm not big on cell phone addicts either. So I might have voted for all 3 had that been allowed.

i voted for the interrupter. Have you seen that saturday night live sketch with the charactor Penelope, shes had several sketches. People that are "one uppers" and no matter what experience you've had... if its good they have one better, if its bad they have one worse! Can't stand that!

One of the "other" rude behaviors submitted was littering. That's definitely a pet peeve of mine. I hate seeing people toss stuff out of their car windows or let their dogs poop on the public sidewalks and then walk away from it.

Good call! I think I'll go with littering as a rude behavior that I really dislike.

I witnessed an accident today at Kimberly and Eastern involving my pet peeve, the red-light runner.
The guy was driving a truck with a trailer carrying an end-loader. He just cruised through the red; at least my light was green when he entered the intersection. My guess: he figured everyone saw him and he was going through. Unfortunately another of my peeves played a role in the collision: the driver of the big vehicle who pulls up too far at the intersection and prevents folks beside him trying to see to the left from getting a look. The victim made a right turn with the light and bam! I hope the driver is OK. The bucket on the end loader separated from the machine and flew down Kimberly.

You know what? that may not have been a part of the end-loader that went flying down Kimberly but rather a large piece of the victim's front end. The impact I did not see, only heard. To tell the truth I thought the red-light runner had skated through unscathed. In fact, I guess he did. The truck suffered no damage that I could see, and the driver and a co-worker were at the roadside being interviewed by the officer when the scene had been cleaned up. Defintely, for me, the red-light runner, major peeve, right after the drivers of beasts, and with Deirdre, Mr. Hot Wheels, one of whom slipped around me at a nice clip in order to get to the stoplight ahead of me not long ago. The accident occurred around 1430.

Very good chance the accident the officers were headed for when the accident at Rookies occurred is the one at Kimberly and Eastern I witnessed. The DFD was there but no officer. Is it the weather? I get nervous when I can't make eye contact with someone sitting at a stop-sign intersection I'm approaching and this lady pulling out from a parking area yesterday was fixated on the vehicle coming from the direction opposite mine and I'm thinking that the two of us are slowing down as we approach one antoher in a narrow street and this fixated lady is thinking the other driver is slowing down to let her out and she's not going to look my way and she'll bash me. SRM, slow down. Slow pokes make you mad but not everyone can make a quick decision. This lady at the parking lot had me really nervous. She wasn't going to look both ways. A lot of incompetence out there.

Good litter story- I live in Leclaire-nice quiet area, nice river view..I hate litter bugs and personally would not throw the tiniest piece of paper out the car window. I was outside getting ready to go somewhere when a little green crapbox of a car passed, the driver threw out a Wendys bag of lefover lunch and paper. I left to go on errands stopped and picked it up so I could deposit in garbage. Well....on down the road I spied the little green crap box of a car parked at a convenience store and the windows were rolled down. No one in the car, so I hefted the Wendys bag right back into that car. I always wondered what they thought.. I did get the heck out of there real fast.

Thought it was somewhat amusing when I was watching a "Mad Men" episode (set in the early 1960s, for the uninitiated) and the family went for a picnic. When they were done, they just shook out the blanket, leaving paper plates, napkins and other trash where it landed, and got in the car and drove away. It was one of those moments when you realize just how much of a change has occurred in our country in the last few decades in regard to the environment.

How'd that mess get back in the car! Hilarious. And they could have used the refuse cans at the station.

You see it at football games when you leave too. Empty bottles left rolling in the stands. It's part of a general tendency toward disrespect perhaps.
Sometimes you see instances of courtesy that lift your heart a bit. I let people "get away with stuff" on the road I think that others might take offense at. I'll go around the block rather than force my car in front of someone in the lane I need, but allowed someone to squeeze ahead of me on Kimberly today and got a friendly wave of gratitude. We CAN be kind to one another and tolerant of the slow. On the bridge with people trying to merge from the ramps, taking turns means a lot to people wanting to get on the bridge and costs you so little time in the big scheme.

Mayor Melissa - We always pick up after our dogs' poop :) Although not everyone in my neighborhood does.

I just had one happen yesterday. A clerk in a shoe store didn't even acknowledge I was there, and was the only employee in the shop. They have no other employees. I was happy to wait my turn. I did tell her that I had an even exchange for a pair of socks. She said nothing. I waited, no joke, over 1/2 hour while she diddled around and diddled around. Then when she was finished, she handed me the replacement. If a clerk is the only person in the store (she said they needed to hire someone) the lonely employee needs to be able to multi-task a bit. She was also rude the the husband of the customer she was waiting on, telling him he had NO business wearing the shoes he was wearing. I felt sorry for the guy, who was clearly embarrassed and told her he LIKED his shoes.

My complaint. Rude store employees with no sense.
