Question of the Day: When do you plan to file your taxes?
Posted by: Melissa C on January 25, 2010 at 3:22PM CST
Ah, tax season. The Feb. 1 deadline for employers to send out W-2s, 1099s, and other fun forms is but a week away. This year, I'm chomping at the bit to file my taxes. I'm usually an Oh-crap-it's-April! person when it comes to filing. But this year, I spent the first weekend of 2010 getting all my files in order, ready to set the TurboTax wheels in motion as soon as all my tax forms are in my hot little hands.

I just checked out 1040 Central on www.irs.gov to find out what were the major changes this year. What caught my eye was the option to get all or part of your refund as a U.S. Savings Bond. That might be a better option for me than just plunking some of my refund into my daughter's savings account. Other exciting changes include the first-time homebuyer tax credit and the ability to deduct charitable donations to Haiti made Jan. 11 through March 1of this year.

Anyone else gearing up for taxes? When do you plan to file?

Well, we always end up a considerable amount in federal taxes every year. So we're going to file our state taxes first, get back the money there and then file federal closer to the deadline. I just love being screwed twice a year! It's refreshing.

just tryin' to figure out how matt and i are supposed to file our taxes this year...we file online, and we may file married on our state, but must file single on federal...can we both file head of household?

Mark...I'd crunch the numbers both ways and see which way saves you the most money.

Unfortunately we are going to owe, owe, owe. We did not compensate for my husband's free tuition which he has to claim as income. :(

We try to break even so we enjoy our money all year round.

In 2008 the extra tax I paid in turned out to be the best investment I made.

Propery taxes coming due about the same time makes this an unhappy time of the year, not something we look forward to.
We use a shoe box to collect the relevant documents as they arrive in the mail.
They're about all in and the work will soon begin with filing in a few weeks.

MarisMom - Not to worry about yet but they want to tax our health benefits in order to pay for health-care reform. It's the price we'll have to pay to reach out with support for those who can't afford insurance and don't have the kind unions have negotiated over the years.
