Question of the Day: Do you plan to complete your Census form?
Posted by: Melissa C on March 3, 2010 at 3:28PM CST
The Census is coming! The Census is coming!

If you live in the Quad-Cities metro area, your form will likely be mailed to you around the middle of the month. But if you live in a rural area, a Census worker could be knocking on your door very soon, hand delivering a form for your household to complete.

Why is this a big deal? Well, in case it hasn't been made perfectly clear by Christopher Guest's Census commercials (and it hasn't), the Census asses the U.S. population in order to determine, among other things, Congressional Districts and the amount of federal funding states, counties and municipalities will receive.

They say the form should only take about 10 minutes to fill out. Are you planning to complete and return yours? (You do know that the Census will send someone to your door if you don't mail your form back in, right?)

I'll probably just give name and number in my household. That's all they need.

can they arrest you if that is all you give them?

I do genealogy work for my family. The census has helped us find an untold number of family members that otherwise we would have never discovered!

Please, fill out the census completely and honestly.
It will make it possible that your future "peeps" will find you!

Pen: As far as I know, you can be fined if you don't fill it out at all, but if you give your name and the number in your household that is all that is legally required. If someone wants to correct me, I'd be more than happy to update what I know.

Census records are sealed for 72 years for privacy reasons, and Census workers are sworn to protect confidentiality or face a $250,000 fine. Although the census is mandatory, I couldn't find any info on citizens being fined for not participating in the census, but I did find that if you are selected to participate in the American Community Survey, a random sample survey conducted every year by the Census Bureau, you could be fined up to $100 for not responding.
The form this year is pretty short. Only 10 questions. No long and short forms, just the same 10 questions for everyone. You can get a preview here.

Of course its the only way the government knows how to distribute money. # of citizens. I have a question, a short time ago there was a link about the word negro being politically incorrect. Why is it on the census form and why does it say, black, african american or negro, what the heck is the difference?

ok I just had a worker drop off the form, and I did it. It seems like they asked more questions in the last one.
