Mobile blogging and video tricks
Posted by: Mayor Melissa on June 24, 2009 at 4:07PM CST
I tried to be clever today and write my post from my new enV3 phone. It's a slick piece of technology and I'm having too much fun exploring all that it can do.

Well, the post did appear in the list, but when clicked upon, there was an error message. I'm guessing this is an unspotted bug from that update we did a month ago. And since nobody else reported it, I'm guessing that not many of you know you can post to your blog when you're away from Quadsville.

If you open up your blog settings (My Stuff, My Blogs, Blog Settings), you'll see an e-mail address for e-mail/mobile posting. If you can e-mail from your phone or PDA, then you can send a long post. Shorter posts can be sent by putting the e-mail address in the To: line of a text message. I haven't tried to send a picture yet.

Has anyone been using this feature?

Most of you have figured out how to embed videos in your blog entries. But for those who haven't, here's a little trick you can learn (that works!).

Copy the embed code for the video. On YouTube, you will see this off to the right of the video. Then open up a new blog entry in Quadsville. After you typed whatever text you want, click on Edit HTML at the bottom of your blog editor window. Then paste the code where you want the video to appear in your blog. Then click back over to Design. When you publish, you'll see the viewer window right there in your blog entry so people can watch the clip without leaving your page.

What other techie tricks do you want to learn? Let me know and I'll keep you posted on when mobile blogging is up and running again.

I already tried it, reported the bug and heard nothing back. :p

I tested it out the week you were gone and emailed Stephanie about it and I believe she said she passed it on to your web design group. I actually tried it with a picture. If you go to my blog, you'll see a post called Test from June 6th. It looks like if I go to my blog and scroll down I can view it. However, when you tried to view it on the list of blog posts from the main page you received an error.

I'm really interested in doing the mobile blogging since I'll be on vacation for 2 weeks starting next Tuesday. We're driving out to California and I wanted to post updates on our drive out there, the vacation while we're there and then the drive back. But if it's not working, I may skip giving updates on Quadsville and just stick to Twitter and Facebook. So if you can, put a rush on the fix. :)

I should add that if you go to my blog you'll see the post there with the picture. However, if you click on the link to go to that post, you receive the error. So I don't know if it will be the same as you have, but you might want to check it out and compare error messages since mine was a picture post.

Also, while I have your attention. Can you please get an answer as to what the limit of characters or words on the QCTimes website comment system are? With the great verbosity (or lack thereof) of the error messages in their comment system we have no idea what that limit is. We know there is one, but without a lot of testing we won't be able to figure it out. It's just wildly frustrating typing out a long post, getting an error message and assuming it's because of the length, but being unable to know how much to trim off your message.

Thanks.

I don't think there is a character limit on QCTimes.com, but I'll check. Didn't know about your bug report while I was gone. That gives me extra ammunition to push them to fix this. Thanks!
