Counting down to Inauguration Day: What are your hopes and dreams for the nation?
Posted by: Melissa C on December 2, 2008 at 9:18AM CST
I know, I know. Most of you are counting down the days to various winter holidays and are absorbed in baking, wrapping, finishing up this semester of school, etc. But it is 49 days until Inauguration Day, and the folks at the Quad-City Times are already planning your newspaper for Jan. 20, 2009.

Managing Editor Jan Touney wants to know: "What are your hopes and dreams for the nation as Barack Obama takes office as president on Inauguration Day, Jan. 20, 2009? The Quad-City Times will publish a selection of readers' thoughts in a special commemorative section in that day's newspaper."

Of course, they will be online, too. I'm also looking for Quad-Citians who are attending inauguration. Rep. Phil Hare's office will take requests for tickets to inauguration until noon on Monday, Dec. 8. Details here. The deadline to enter the ticket lottery through Rep. Bruce Braley's office is tomorrow, Dec. 3. Details here.

If you get to go, I want to know, because I'd like you to blog about the experience here in Quadsville. I'll also be hosting a live chat during the inauguration. More details on that to come.

To submit your Inauguration Day thoughts for inclusion in the Jan. 20 edition of the Times, you can e-mail them to newsroom@qctimes.com with "Obama Message" in the subject line or just leave them in the comments below. If you know someone who would like to share their hopes and dreams for the nation, but are not digitally connected, they can send them via snail mail to Quad-City Times, "Obama Message", 500 E. 3rd St., Davenport, IA 52801.

My hopes and dreams are that Obama restore the Bill of Rights. I hope and dream that he restores the rule of law. I hope and dream that he investigates and prosecutes the people responsible for the last 8 years of crimes committed in the name of our nation. I hope and dream that the ideals of the people who founded this nation once again become important in the direction our country is headed.

The nation needs healing, unification and strength of fiscal restraint from a leader. I hope and pray an Obama administration can.

Yet, I still wonder why only 59% of eligible voters bothered to vote? That was less than in the last presidential election in 04.

It was a dream that more voters would vote this past November.

How could some people be so apathetic in an election so important?

The voting statistic that hit clearly was that the identified majority voted according to economic considerations rather than character and experience issues.

Many new voters who had taken advantage of all the resources that America offers but had never thought it important to vote before. I find that strange.

I hope we as a nation can come together to solve the problems we face. I hope it doesn't take another 9/11 to bring us together.

We live in one of the best countries on earth and we need to appreciate all that we've been given, and make sure we are good stewards of our resources.
