Backward jets and broken glass
Posted by: Melissa C on June 22, 2009 at 10:10AM CST
What a busy weekend. With Sturgis, the Air Show, crazy storms and Father's Day, it looks like Quadsvillagers kept themselves occupied.

Check out these photos and videos from the Air Show that Quad-City Images took. Did you know a Harrier jet could fly backward? I didn't.

Got some good reports on Starman's blog about his progress in the Race Across America. Sounds kinda rough out there.

What did you do for Father's Day? I helped clean up broken glass and debris at my dad's cabin on the Mississippi just south of Lock & Dam 18. A tornado came through early Thursday morning, but didn't touch down (my future brother-in-law says in the South they call that a gustnado). It did, however, twist off the top of a tree, smash it into the back of the deck and take the back railing and the grill crashing 30 feet down with it. Sent all the deck furniture (talking heavy glass table top kind) flying. Broke their boat dock in two. They had three holes in the roof that they've already gotten fixed and a few windows blown out. My dad and step-mom were there at the time and are lucky nothing worse happened to them. Not really anyplace to take shelter when your home is 30 feet in the air and there's no storm cellar in sight. The kicker is that this is about the time last year that they lost their other cabin to the flood. This one is built high enough to clear any floodwater. But Mother Nature will get ya one way or another....

We have some good entries so far in this week's photo contest. "Take Me Out to the Ball Game" is the theme. Enter yours before noon Wednesday.

I'm surely glad the folks weren't hurt. It was not good weather for the physical labor in the clean-up either.
My daughter's oak came down on my son-in-law's truck.
We were spared except for my daughter's dog we were babysitting. She is deathly afraid of storms and had to weather not only thunderstorms and rain lashing the house but also the Blue Angels thundering over.

We rented a house on stilts on Tybee Island, GA, one year. Apparently it was built to "bend" and not break as the whole stucture would wobble when the washer cycled into spin.
Sounds like your dad's cabin is built tough withstanding the winds that felled trees!

Did you have to medicate the dog? I hope she's okay.

MarisMom - No. She seeks a place where she has to squeeze in. We put up a kennel and covered it with sheets to give her "cover." She pants and trembles. There is no way to comfort her. She's OK.
Thanks for asking after her.

That was quite the blow. A good part of the soffit is now gone from my house. I had water blowing under the front door and shooting into the house like a fountain... and could see the house wall moving back and forth.

A friend who used to do roofing jobs shot some caulk under shingles and flashing he thought might have been responsible for past leaks above the door to the deck, and as the storm raged for ten minutes I considered calling him with congratulations for having successfully addressed the problem. However, the best of jobs couldn't hold up against this storm, and the dogs were soon investigating a drip-drip on the floor at the door.
