Question of the Day: What form do your year-end greetings take?
Posted by: Melissa C at 5:04PM CST on November 30, 2009
No matter what your family traditions, the end of the year is a time when many people take stock of the preceding 12 months, look forward to plans for the next year and take a moment to update and reconnect with family and friends. Whether you send Hanukkah greetings or celebrate the Solstice, mail out Christmas cards or simply wish everyone a Happy New Year, what form do your year-end greetings take?
If you've got any creative (and preferable cheap and eco-friendly) ideas, please share them below. I sent out a video greeting last year. Still haven't decided what route to go this year.

Some of us are blessed with parents, significant others and children who are great gifters and always find the perfect surprise for holiday gifts. Others spend a lot of time in the return lines. That begs the question - should you buy your own presents?
I don't so much care about getting gifts - it's more exciting for me to watch people open the gifts I'm giving - but I have struggled with this as relates to the Santa Claus illusion. I mean, it would look strange - nay, downright incriminating - if my stocking were empty on Dec. 25, right? I usually get around it with Santa leaving a family gift, like he always did when I was little. A puzzle or game or something the whole clan can enjoy. What about you? Do you buy your own gifts for the holidays or other special occasions? Are you just very specific when writing out your wish list? Vote in the poll, then let the discussion roll.

We'll be gathering Monday, Nov. 30 at 7 p.m. in the brewer's lounge at Great River Brewery, 322 E. 2nd St., Davenport (just a couple blocks off the Government Bridge).
Our friend Fly on the Wall will be passing through town that day and I'm hoping several more of you can join us for a little gathering to kick off the holidays. Fly says he will be deploying to "the sandbox" in January/February, so this might be the last time for a little while that we'll get to visit in person with our favorite Naval officer. Great River has several tasty brews made right on site. They also craft an old-fashioned root beer that I hear is pretty good. Drop a comment below if you can join us. Looking forward to seeing everyone and hearing about your Thanksgiving gatherings and what else you've been up to.

Check as many as apply. And Happy Thanksgiving to all of you.

On Monday, Iowa reinstated its film tax credit program after losing a legal battle with a production company. That company was granted $6.5 million in tax credits before a scandal erupted in the Iowa Department of Economic Development revealing shoddy record-keeping and inappropriate use of tax credits.
Do you think reinstating the film tax credit program is good for Iowa?

In just a few hours, "The Twilight Saga: New Moon" will open in movie theaters nationwide. Parties are being held in local libraries and living rooms in anticipation of the next installment of the vampire series.
Are you going to the movie? Have you been reading the books? Do you have a Bella or Edward costume? Just how much do you crave "Twilight?"

The McDonald's promotion ended Monday, so if you want to play Monopoly, it's back to the Parker Brothers board game for you. A few coworkers reported fighting with siblings as kids over their favorite token. Do you have a favorite Monopoly playing piece? The horse and rider, perhaps? Or the top hat? Does anyone ever really want the iron?
Vote for your token of choice below. (Not all pieces are in every edition of the game.)

I'd say it's the topic of the day: The feds are looking at turning the Thomson Correctional Center into a federal prison and moving the Guantanamo Bay detainees to the site (along with other federal prisoners). It would put to use the facility that has sat empty for eight years. But not all area residents are supportive.
Do you think this is a good plan?

What's in a name? Well, that all depends...
My daughter's name was the only one her father and I could agree on. It was on the list of first names he came up with and it was there because he was quite fond of Gwen Stefani. I wanted a Celtic name, so her full name became Gwenyth, which is also a form of Jennifer, my sister's name. How did you choose your kids' names? And what do you think of the two most popular names for Iowa babies?

The number 13 has a reputation for being unlucky. Few professional
athletes (Iowa native Kurt Warner of the NFL Arizona Cardinals being an
exception) will wear 13 on their uniforms. Friday is Nov. 13, or more
specifically, Friday the 13th. The fear of Friday the 13th is called
paraskevidekatriaphobia. Are you paraskevidekatriaphobic? Are you superstitious
about the number 13?

The Country Music Association Awards are tonight at 7 p.m. (check out David Burke's blog to offer your predictions on the winners). I know country music isn't everyone's cup of tea. So what is?
Tell us your favorite type of music. Better yet, offer some favorite artists/tunes in the comments below. Some of us might want to freshen up our playlists.

I hope several of you check more than one box on this poll. And please, if you can, stop by the parade in Davenport. It was such a small crowd last year. These guys and gals deserve a better show of support and appreciation.
To all the vets here in Quadsville, thank you for your service and your sacrifice. We salute you!

If you're still hanging in there after Round X of the health-care reform bouts in the House and Senate, how do you think this will all turn out?

I’ve never had a dog, and cats don’t take too kindly to dress-up play, so puppies in costume crack me up. Honorable Mention

The last two polls have been doozies, so let's take it down a notch and back a few years to the time spent watching "Sesame Street" as kids or with our kids (and grandkids).
We all have our favorite "Sesame Street" characters. You know how disappointed you were if they weren't in that day's episode. I was always really excited when Snuffy appeared in an episode, but I also remember really liking The Count. Oh, and Oscar the Grouch. Haha!
"Sesame Street" is now 40 years old (can you believe it?), so in honor of its 40th season, tell us which Muppet character is your favorite. (Also check this out if you are a huge fan of the Muppets!)

If I didn't push your buttons enough yesterday...
Earlier this year, the Iowa Supreme Court legalized gay marriage in the state. On Tuesday, voters in Maine rejected a gay marriage law -- by a very close vote (53%). Now critics of gay marriage in Iowa said they’ll push state legislators for a referendum in Iowa. How should Iowa proceed?

Illinois passed the Parental Notice of Abortion Act in 1995. But today was the first day it could be enforced in the state. According to a wire story:
The law requires doctors to notify the parents or guardians of girls 17 or younger before the teens get abortions. The law doesn't require parental consent, only that the doctor give 48 hours notice before an abortion. Illinois joins 35 other states with similar laws [Ed: including Iowa]. The law requires no notice in a medical emergency or in cases of sexual abuse, and a provision allows girls to bypass parental notification by going to a judge. The ACLU is seeking a restraining order to prevent the act from being enforced. Do you think doctors should be required to notify parents of minors before performing an abortion? (Feel free to comment, but remember the question is about parental notification, not whether or not abortions should be performed. Keep it civil.)

The urban chicken movement has some pretty strong supporters in Davenport, as well as other Iowa communities. I mean, it's Iowa, right? Farming is our heritage.
But most city ordinances have been amended to exclude livestock from the list of acceptable animals to raise in your backyard. Should city councils consider allowing a limited number of chickens within city limits?

And, of course, in today's municipal elections on the Iowa side. Those polls close at 8 p.m. You can vote in the Halloween photo contest until noon Friday.
There are 25 great shots of kids in costumes, adults in costumes, dogs in costumes and spooky scenes. Vote for your favorite!
