Question of the Day: What improvements would you like to see to Lindsay Park?
Posted by: Mayor Melissa at 4:29PM CST on September 30, 2009
The Lindsay Park Steering Committee met Tuesday night to work on the plan for improvements to the park in the Village of East Davenport. You can read the entire list of proposed improvements here, including signage, tree-trimming and other maintenance issues. Below are five of the major projects that have been suggested by the committee - some of them long-term and/or requiring a chunk of change. Of these major improvements, which would you like to see? You can vote for more than one project.

The Loop buses will be operating in a month or two, offering late night and weekend rides between the Quad-Cities many downtowns. You can hop on the retro-looking buses for $1 a ride. It seems like a convenient way to go from venue to venue without having to find parking or worrying about a DUI. But some have wondered, if you don't live downtown, how do you ultimately get home? Maybe the lushes aren't the target market. :-) Tell us if you will ride the Loop.

After reading through all the great discussion on Anne-Marie's blog about end-of-life decisions (and writing a column about it), I've been wondering how many people actually have living wills that they have discussed with their families. It's something I've always planned to create, but I've never gotten around to it. But I suppose I should. Have you all had these conversations with your loved ones?

As Stephanie De Pasquale and I were discussing what night to go see the Rocky Horror Show at the Harrison Hilltop Theatre, Stephanie said why not invite Quadsvillagers to come and make this the October meet-up? It satisfies our suggested requirements of being able to come in costume (not required, but encouraged) and having a Halloween theme. So we're going to try this out.
We've decided to converge on the opening night performance (early show) at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 17. This is the live version of Rocky Horror - not the movie - and it's the first time in a VERY LONG TIME that it's been done in the QC. Talk backs are encouraged and it promises to be a hoot (full disclosure: my other half is in the cast). You can RSVP below, either in the comments or, if you are on Twitter, via the Twtvite (and then retweet it, please!). BUT - you also have to RSVP with the theatre to make sure you will have a seat. Here are the details and info on making reservations (Bonus: reserved tickets cost $2 less). I think this will be a blast, and if all goes well, maybe we'll have more meet-ups at existing events. Anyone got ideas for November? I've always wanted to go on a hike with the Black Hawk Hiking Club. Other suggestions?

Reporter Stephanie De Pasquale will be chatting Wednesday at 11 a.m. with Iowa Rep. Jim Lykam about commercial breeding facilities, often referred to as "puppy mills," in Iowa. Stephanie and Rep. Lykam recently visited a few of these. You can read Stephanie's story here.
Rep. Lykam will be able to answer your questions about legislation he is working on to allow the state more oversight of these breeding facilities. Come with your comments and questions.

It might be tough, but you can only pick 5. That's how many of this year's nominees will make the 2010 cut to become Rock & Roll Hall of Famers.

What the heck? The Illinois Supreme Court heard arguments over whether the value of a spouse’s
sick and vacation days can be split in a divorce — a case that could have
significant impact on divorce proceedings in the state.
To me, that's splitting the finest of hairs. How many things can we find to fight over in a divorce? But I'll let you be the judge, or justices — Should a spouse be entitled to split the value of a spouse’s accumulated sick/vacation days in divorce proceedings?

Quad-City Congressmen Bruce Braley, D-Iowa, and Phil Hare (D-Ill.) are on
opposite sides of a proposal to extend unemployment benefits. The bill would
extend unemployment payments by 13 weeks to 300,000 people in 18 states who are
scheduled to exhaust their benefits soon.
Do you favor extending jobless benefits to these people?

The City of Davenport is considering nixing most of its downtown parking meters in favor of free, two-hour parking spots, at least for a few months. You can learn more about this aspect of the Davenport in Motion plan by attending public input sessions this week.
After a trial period, some spots may return to metered spots, but at different rates or for different time amounts. Many other Q-C downtowns have just such a combination of free parking and premium metered spots. So, how much do you think is a fair price for an hour of parking in downtown Davenport?

Finally, the Illinois DOT released bridge inspection reports that show just how critical the condition of the I-80 bridge is. If you missed the story over the weekend, here it is, along with an editorial detailing the difficulty of getting a straight story about this bridge from IDOT.
The repairs to this bridge are likely to keep work commutes and leisure travel inconvenient in this part of the QCA for quite some time. Everyone has a bridge that they use the most - usually out of convenience. But I'm wondering which bridge is your favorite? Which bridge do you feel the most comfortable driving, riding or walking across?

It looks like Davenport's riverfront bike path will soon be connected to the Duck Creek trail system once a new bridge from Credit Island is completed. Construction could start this fall and be completed in less than a year.
How do you use the many bike paths and trail systems in the Quad-Cities? Are you excited about the new trail connection?

The Davenport City Council is considering denying a liquor license to the individual who wants to reopen the former Chorus Line strip club on Brady Street. But it's not clear if they've got a strong legal leg to stand on in doing so. What's your position on the Chorus Line re-opening?

A couple days ago, we asked you who was your favorite Iowa governor of the last 40 years. Long-time governor Bob Ray managed to nudge out Terry Branstad by a few percentage points with 38% of the vote. Branstad had 36%, Tom Vilsack got 20% and sitting Gov. Chet Culver received 6% of the vote.
Now it's time to poll our brethren on the other side of the river. The Iowa poll was sparked by news stories that Branstad is being heavily pressured to run in 2010. I haven't heard any rumblings about former Illinois governors being asked to return to Springfield. But after two indicted governors, I have heard some folks pining for the calm of Jim Edgar's administration. So, who was your favorite Illinois governor?

Thanks so much to all who stopped by our Quadsville meet-up/tweet-up last night at Rookie's. We had a blast. Julie Abdel-Fattah, Robbi and I toasted Patrick Swayze with our Dirty (Dancing) Martinis (thanks, Julie!). Stephanie De Pasquale and I gave Jaimy Marie - a new arrival in the QC and a Quadsville Twitter follower - our recommendations for QC nightlife and weekend fun spots. Klowner (another tweep) was there. Srm stopped by before heading to an agility practice with his dog and Steve Quartell of the Harrison Hilltop Theatre made an appearance before heading to the Hilltop Neighborhood planning meeting. And Sikpuppy steered me toward an excellent BLT on the menu and came up with another good idea for next month's meet-up. More on that in a minute...
Several in attendance were former military. We were all fascinated to learn that when Julie joined the Marines in the 80s, the women had quite a different experience from men. The ladies did not train with M-16s or do the obstacle course. They were, however, required to take classes on how to do their hair and make-up and how to iron their uniforms. According to Julie, there was a perception that any woman wanting to join the service must be butch, so they were trying to feminize them a bit. Sikpuppy - an Army vet - told us about the copious amounts of starch used on anything they sent to the laundry service. He said his jeans would practically stand on their own when he got them back. We talked a bit about this week's outbursts from Joe Wilson, Kanye West and Serena Williams. That led into talks about the tea party protests and to the e-mails Sik has been receiving from GOP and/or right-wing sources. If you've missed them, you can check out his blog. He posts a lot of them here as a testament to how swiftly Internet rumors spread. What he doesn't post are all the e-mails he gets with racial undertones, like ones with Obama lawn jockeys. Anyone else getting stuff like this? Or far-out stuff from the left? If you weren't there, you missed a great time and I hope you can join us next time. Sik suggested a Halloween party so that those who want to preserve their anonymity can still join in a meet-up. Just come in costume. We're looking for a spot that already has a Halloween costume going on, probably on Friday, Oct. 30, so keep your ears open and write in with suggestions. Have a great week!

RIP Patrick Swayze.
But I'm not here to ask you about drinks. I'm here to ask you what is your favorite Patrick Swayze movie. Write-ins welcome. His passing was the first thing I heard when I turned on the radio this morning. Throughout the day, those of us heading to tonight's Quadsville meet-up have been trying to come up with the perfect beverage with which to toast the star of "Ghost," "Dirty Dancing" and "Point Break." Julie Abdel-Fattah wins with the Dirty (Dancing) Martini. One of my Facebook friends who was in Santa Fe during filming for "Red Dawn" said he saw Swayze down lots of Dos Equis, along with muy chips and salsa. Srm suggested "Blood of a deer, of course." (Here's the "Red Dawn" reference: http://bit.ly/RMSWo) But I'm not here to ask you about drinks. I'm here to ask you what is your favorite Patrick Swayze movie. Write-ins welcome.

A handful of Quadsvillagers have committed to meeting up Tuesday, Sept. 15, 5:30-7 p.m. at Rookie's Sports Bar & Grill, 2818 Brady St., Davenport. Sikpuppy says they've got "darn good hot wings." I've heard from 7 or 8 people that they'll be there. I'll be wearing a Quadsville shirt, so should be easy to spot me. See you there!

The people of Iowa keep turning up the heat on former Gov. Terry Branstad to throw his hat into the race for 2010. The latest push comes in the form of radio ads paid for by the Draft Branstad PAC.
Are you one of the ones longing for the Branstad days? Or do you have another favorite Iowa gov from the last 40 years? Take our poll by 5 p.m. Tuesday. Then we'll ask the folks on the other side of the river for their favorite gov. Any PACs pushing Jim Edgar to run again?

Question of the Day: How do you dispose of your leaves?
Posted by: Mayor Melissa at 2:22PM CST on September 9, 2009
Congratulations to Moline for joining Rock Island, Davenport and Bettendorf in banning leaf burning. There are lots of alternatives to burning those leaves (some more polite than others), which leads to today's poll...

I know, I know... Who wants to think about winter when we are just starting to savor autumn? The deliciously cool nights, snuggly sweaters, apple cider, bonfires (can you tell it's my favorite season?).
But I did hear something on NPR this morning that perked up my ears and got me thinking about winter a little: Natural gas prices are at a 7-year low. MidAmerican Energy predicts winter heating costs will be down 40% for their customers. I'll drink a hot buttered rum to that! Now, here's your chance to play the weatherman (or lady). What kind of a winter are we going to have in the QCA?

Cash is something I never seem to have around. Unless I'm going to a festival or event where I know cash will be more convenient, I'm a debit card kind of person.
When I was in Austria last fall, almost everyone carried and used cash for purchases in restaurants, pubs, grocery stores or cultural centers. The plastic was reserved for department store shopping, and even then, many people still used cash. That's just the way they tend to operate. It's much tougher to get a credit or debit card there, so people still operate on a cash basis. The bonus: You can't spend what you don't have. How much cash do you carry?

There's been a debate in the office this week about how often you should wash a pair of jeans. So, I'm going to put the question to all of you: How many times should you wear a pair of jeans before washing them?
