Planning a meet-up
Posted by: Mayor Melissa at 10:13AM CST on August 31, 2009
Hey everyone. Last week I asked if it was time to restart Quadsville meet-ups after our summer off. A couple people suggested Tuesday, Sept. 15 as the date. Sikpuppy suggested Rookie's Sports Bar at 29th & Brady as a meeting location.
I'm still taking input, so please leave your 2 cents below. I want to make sure our meet-up location is convenient for most of us location-wise and atmosphere-wise. Our biggest turnout to date was at a coffee house. Is meeting at a pub a turn-off to some of you? I can go either way after work - beer or coffee. ;-) Food's good, too! Parkersburg on NPR As I was driving my daughter to school this morning, I heard a feature on Aplington-Parkersburg's first game (a win) of the season on Morning Edition. It was part of their Friday Night Lives series on high school football. As you all, I'm sure, recall, Ed Thomas, their long-time coach, was fatally shot June 24 by a former player. More than 3,000 people came to Parkersburg (population about 1,800) for the first game of the season to pay tribute to Thomas and support the team. You can hear a podcast of the report here. Or you can read a story here. Live United Week In support of United Way's Live United Week, we are asking you to tell us how you live united. It can be a short essay or just a sentence or two telling us what you do to make our community a better place to live. Just click here to submit. And make sure to drop by the United Way of the Quad-Cities Area group this week for Live United updates. Photo contest winners Congrats to Hildasue Petersen and Paul Boynton for their wins in the First Day of School photo contest. You can still view all the entries here.

Football season is here! Time to dig out the stadium blankets and team sweatshirts and to vote in our poll...

Hi all,
If Quadsville has been loading slowly for you today, you're not alone. Some site updates will be taking place Thursday and Friday that will probably slow down the site a bit. You might notice some things that are a little off here and there. Just hang with us. Everything should be back to normal by the weekend. If you do spot persistent bugs after the updates, though, please let me know. Thanks for your patience!

The city of Moline is the latest municipality to consider a ban on leaf burning. Rock Island passed a ban last year and the Iowa Quad-Cities has had a ban in place for some time. Where do you stand on the burn debate?

I knew he wasn't faring well with the brain cancer, but I still drew in my breath sharply this morning when I turned on the radio and heard Sen. Ted Kennedy had died last night. Whether you loved him or hated him or fell somewhere in between, you have to agree that he is one of -- or perhaps the most -- iconic senator of the past century. There's a reason he was called the Lion of the Senate.
Share your memories of Sen. Kennedy below and look for photos of his visits to the Quad-Cities on tomorrow's Quad-City Times Editorial Page.

Kay Luna posed a great question on her blog this week: At what age should kids get their first cell phone?
There's been quite a discussion on her post, so I thought I'd make this a formal Quadsville Question of the Day (using your comments as guidelines for the poll answers, of course). When I got a new phone recently, I gave my 7-year-old my old phone as a toy. She always liked to take photos with it, so she continues to do that and use the stopwatch feature to time herself getting dressed. But now she's wanting me to teach her how to text. Oy. Luckily, her phone can do nothing more than dial 911 (any cell phone can, with or without a contract - did you know that?). Looking forward to seeing these poll results! Pass it along to your friends.

A recent survey showed that more Iowa drivers than ever are buckling up -- more than 93 percent. I was raised to put my seat belt on the second I got in the car, but I know not everyone does so. So I'm wondering...

I've gotten
e-mails from several of you asking when we are going to start having meet-ups
again. I suppose the summer vacation season is just about over, so let's figure
out a time to hold our first meet-up of the fall.
Only one or two people showed
up to the last few meet-ups that I scheduled, so I'd like you to take the lead
in organizing a good time & place for the next one. I can make most weekday
evenings, although Mondays and Tuesdays are better for me. But I can make later
in the week work if it's best for all of you.
Let's start throwing out some
dates (after Labor Day, por favor) and locations here in the comments and try to
come to a consensus. I'm looking forward to talking with you all in
person!

First Day of School photo contest. We've got 26 super entries (thanks,
everyone!) to chose from. Get your vote in by noon Thursday and look for the
winners in Sunday's Quad-City Times!

This weekend Ribfest and River Roots Live return to downtown Davenport. Admission is free, so if you've got a craving for BBQ and some good tunes, head down to 2nd Street and check out the offerings.
While Ribfest brings some of the best rib vendors from around the country and locally, we want to know who has the best BBQ ribs in the Quad-Cities. Feel free to write in your favorite if it's not on here or leave your comments below.

Entries in our First Day of School photo contest are picking up, so I've extended the deadline to Monday at noon. That way, those of you whose first day was today or who are taking kids to college this weekend can get in on the action.
Watch for Sunday's Quadsville page in the Quad-City Times for an extra you can't get online. In addition to sharing marismom's story about her youngest going off to kindergarten and Teenager's post about heading off to college, I've got a lovely letter and photos from Devota Hein, who doesn't have a computer, describing her first day of school in 1932. It's a read you don't want to miss. Chat transcript Sunday also concludes the Times' 8-day State of Marriage special series. Today, Rabbi Henry Jay Karp and licensed marriage counselor Sarah Beck joined us for a live chat about the strengths and weaknesses of modern marriages. If you missed it, you can read the transcript here. Great questions and thoughtful (and thought-provoking) answers.

The marriage counselors interviewed for the Quad-City Times State of Marriage special project pointed out that technology posed a new threat to modern marriages. Or rather, a new avenue for age-old threats (infidelity, distrust, addictions) to destroy a relationship. But it all depends on how you use technology in your relationship. For example, do you text to efficiently communicate about day-to-day tasks or to avoid talking about an important issue face-to-face?
Kay Luna blogged about this last week and several of you responded very candidly. But we thought we'd open this up in a more anonymous way and ask...

QCA marriage counselors will be online with us at 10 a.m. Thursday to discuss the strengths and weaknesses of modern marriages. Join in with your questions and stories.
This is part of the Quad-City Times State of Marriage special project.

If you've got a garden, chances are the bountiful harvest is starting to be more than you and your family can consume.
One of my friends recently shared some cherry tomatoes (amazing!), cucumbers (super tasty!) and zucchini (we'll get to that...) with me. The zucchini was enormous. She went on vacation for a week and came back to find the Godzilla-size vegetables overrunning her garden. I was given two. I made two loaves of zucchini bread last night and only use HALF of one of the zukes. Here's my daughter cradling one: It probably weighs as much as a 7 month old baby. (Oh yeah ... she's dressed as a pirate because we had all just gone to see "Peter Pan" at Circa '21.) So what are you doing with all that surplus?

I propose a curfew on thunderstorms in the greater QCA.
No loud thundering is to occur after 12:30 a.m. Should a storm system be caught rumbling or shining bright bolts of lightning through bedroom windows after that hour, Mother Nature shall provide to the sleep-deprived parties: 1. No less than 3 cups of coffee by 7 a.m. the next morning (1st offense). 2. A set of noise canceling head phones (2nd offense). 3. A paid day off work on the day following the storm so that the bleary-eyed individuals can catch up on their sleep (3rd offense). Who's with me? I used to be able to sleep right through the most rambunctious of thunderstorms. But motherhood has lightened my sleeping. I tossed and turned much of the night, always keeping an ear cocked for footsteps coming from my daughter's room. I kept waking up every 5 minutes expecting to see her at my bedside or hear her calling from her room. But no. She slept through everything. At 3 a.m. I finally got up and made myself some toast. The storm had petered out enough by 4 a.m. for me to finally fall asleep, but that 6 a.m. alarm was brutal. Anyone else kept up by the storm last night? Back to school photo contest Friday is the deadline for our First Day of School photo contest. Just click here to submit your entry.

I wish I could include an option on the poll to just pull a lever and let your answer be wherever the cherries line up. Instead, you'll actually have to choose the option you prefer or write in your own. Here's a story with some background on the casino license.

Cities seem to be concerned with sidewalks this summer. Bettendorf has an intern out pounding the pavement to find out where the gaps are in the city's sidewalk system. In Davenport, the City Council is trying to come up with a way to fund new sidewalks without passing on a huge bill to homeowners.
How are the sidewalks in your neighborhood?

Question of the Day: Which of these Woodstock artists is your favorite?
Posted by: Mayor Melissa at 5:02PM CST on August 11, 2009
From Aug. 15-17, 1969, thousands of people flocked to Bethel, N.Y., for the Woodstock Music & Art Fair. That was 40 years ago this week. My mom was there. Were you?
If you were, Entertainment Editor David Burke wants to talk to you! Whether you were there or not in that Summer of Love, you're bound to have a favorite among all the musical acts that performed at Woodstock. So take our poll and forward it on to your friends!

Just looking at the photos of goodies from the garden posted by srm, NewlyWoodwards and mbuel has my mouth watering. Luckily, I'm about to leave work and pick up my cooler full of fresh veggies from my CSA! The sweet corn has been amazing, but OH! I'm hankering for some ripe, red tomatoes!
What's your favorite homegrown delicacy?

If you're having trouble staying awake this Monday morning, check out this eye-opening read. Times Springfield Bureau reporter Kurt Erickson's blog post about what Illinois political campaigns spent during the first half of the year has some impressive numbers in it. I didn't blink at the $11,000-some spent on pizza. Gotta keep those volunteers going. But $6,500 on guns for raffle prizes? And they spent more on golf than they did on lawyers. Give it a read.
There's also a great discussion on Wheezy's blog about the "belligerence tactics" being used at health care reform town hall meetings. Chowdogz points out there's a different behavior expectation for outdoor marches and demonstrations versus structured meetings held indoors. What do you think? There's a new photo contest running this month. Enter your best First Day of School photos by Aug. 21. Voting goes from Aug. 21-27.

Go to IMDB.com and type in "John Hughes" and you'll come up with a list of some of the best comedies of the '80s and '90s. "Ferris Bueller's Day Off." "Weird Science." "The Breakfast Club." All those National Lampoon vacation movies.
Hughes died suddenly on Thursday at age 59. I'm guessing the video rental stores have already seen a rush to nab some of his well-known flicks for weekend movie marathon memorials. What's your favorite John Hughes film?

Both Twitter and Facebook have been down or unreliable much of today due to denial-of-service attacks. I imagine a DoS attack as a zillion zipping V-wing fighters pelting the Death Star with laser missiles (because I imagine cyberspace as the "final frontier"), but Wikipedia explains it in actual computer terms, if you're interested.
Luckily, things are just peachy here in Quadsville, so if you're suffering socnet withdrawal, this is the place to get your fix. Here are a few ideas to get you going: Sick of hearing about the birthers but not of spouting off about them? Here's your discussion. Enjoy candid photography? Vote for your favorite in the "Let's Hear It For The Boy" photo contest. Wondering what to do this weekend? Stephanie De Pasquale has some ideas in The Quads. Wishing you'd planted a garden this year? Drool over the Woodwards' veggies and flowers in this pictorial update. Saddle shoes or flip-flops? Take our poll on what your kids are wearing on their first day of school. Now, don't be a stranger once Twitter and Facebook are back full-strength! But do give us a follow @quadsville if you're on Twitter. And let me know: Do you think it's a little too meta to have a Facebook page for Quadsville? That would be a social networking profile for a social network. I haven't created one yet 'cause I thought maybe a black hole would open up in cyberspace and everyone's iPhones would implode.

I still remember the outfit my mother put me in for the first day of kindergarten. In fact, I still have it (she didn't throw a darn thing out).
Picking out the outfit for the First Day of School was a big deal in my house growing up. I'm sure many of you moms and dads have something selected for your kids - especially the littler ones - to wear on their big day. Today, take our poll about what your kids are (or did, if they are grown and gone) wear to school on the first day. Then, dig out your first day photos and snap new ones. Starting Friday at noon, we'll have a First Day of School photo contest going on for at least a couple weeks. I gotta go dig out some of me and some of my daughter.... Have fun!
