We need to have a talk about plagiarized blog posts
Posted by: Stephanie De Pasquale at 1:53PM CST on July 15, 2010
A few recent blog posts have been made up of news articles, chain e-mails or other content found on the web that has been directly copied and pasted from its original source.

While we definitely want you all to blog about and discuss the news of the day, it needs to be in your own words.

Copying and pasting another person's words, even if it's just a phrase, is plagiarism and violates copyright laws. If you do think the original writer said it better than you can, that's fine, but you have to give credit where it's due. This can be done by putting copied text in quotes and making it clear where you got it from. You can even link back to the original article. The same goes for photos. If you didn't take it, then you need to say where it came from, otherwise you're committing plagiarism.

Bottom line, if you didn't write it or shoot it, then you need to make sure everybody knows who did.

We want you all to discuss current events in your own words because it lends a more personal touch to your blogs. Quadsville gives you the chance to write what you really feel about the topic and discuss those opinions with others. With as much passion as some of you feel about politics, religion and other issues, I'd think you all would love to put in your own two cents on the topic. And it's not your two cents if you copied and pasted someone else's words.

If you have any questions about plagiarism, visit www.plagiarism.org for more information.

Question of the day: One way or two? What say you?
Posted by: Michael Donnelly at 10:16AM CST on July 1, 2010
The city of Davenport is considering making switches in traffic patterns in the city which would make one-way downtown streets two-ways with bike paths. City officials are also looking at making Brady and Harrison streets two-ways arguing that the present one-way system is stunting commercial and retail growth.
