7 fairly amusing things to do in Quadsville today
Posted by: Melissa C at 11:06AM CST on July 30, 2009
I'm loving the comments on the Cash for Clunkers poll. I've got a blog coming about my car evolution, but I've got to dig out photos tonight. In the meantime, here are 7 fun things to do in Quadsville today:
1. Take a virtual trip. Have you been following along with the group that's down in the Dominican Republic on a mission trip? They are blogging daily and have posted some photos, too. 2. Take a poll. Lot's of Hollywood celebrities have visited the Quad-Cities this summer. Who's your favorite? 3. Vote in the photo contest. The theme is It Keeps You Runnin.' A little bit of Photoshopping going on this week, I believe, but it'll make you laugh. 4. Wish Kay Luna a Happy Birthday! She turns 35 tomorrow and will be out of the office to mourn -- er, celebrate. ;-) She's a little freaked out by this number, so tell her how great she looks! 5. Tell us what all the best place, people and things are in the QC. The 2009 Readers' Choice Awards are here and you can vote until Monday. Don't see your fave? Write it in. 6. Share your ISC memories. The ISC fastpitch tournament is coming back to the QC after a 40-year absence and our sports team is looking for photos and memories from the 1967 tournament. 7. Invite a friend to join Quadsville. The more the merrier, I always say. If you've got a friend who blogs elsewhere, let me know. We can mirror the posts to their Quadsville profile. Or if you have a friend who would enjoy the site, invite them to come play, discuss and rant with us.

Cast your ballot in the 2009 Readers' Choice Awards!
Posted by: Melissa C at 4:04PM CST on July 28, 2009
It's here! The Quad-City Times Readers' Choice Awards 2009, brought to you by .... (d
rum roll, please) ... QUADSVILLE!
(moving orchestral background music & red carpet shots -- GO!) OK, it may not be as glamorous as a Hollywood awards show, but it is your chance to vote on the best restaurants, food, people, places, sports teams, stores, services and entertainment in the Quad-City Area. So put on your Louis Vuitton evening wear (or just plop down in your skivvies) and vote for your favorites by Aug. 3. If your choice isn't in the drop-down list, just write it in. Our databases are built based on past nominees in each category. So if your favorite margarita spot or auto repair shop isn't listed, make sure it gets included!

Bix wrap-up and a spout-off about spam
Posted by: Melissa C at 11:53AM CST on July 27, 2009
If you (like me) are still on a bit of a runner's high from Bix
weekend, here are a few posts to check out before letting go of Bix
2009:
--QC Images took some great photos and movies of the crowd at the starting line and the first runners crossing the finish line. -- Chris Baldus has a post about finishing the Bix. -- Kay Luna wrote about Babycake's first experience with the Jr. Bix (or "The Mix" as she called it).
-- And I've got a few thoughts of my own about the race I've now run four times. -- Oh, and you can take our poll about which part of Bix weekend is your favorite until about 5 p.m. today. Thanks to everyone who took part in our live blog on Saturday and who tweeted updates and photos from the course. It made for a fun day.A legitimate gripe Chowdogz posted a bit of a rant this morning about folks who post cartoon images, passarounds and other unoriginal images in the photos section on Quadsville, which has prompted this reminder... ONLY ORIGINAL PHOTOS -- ones that you took or have the rights to -- should be posted in your photo galleries on Quadsville. If you are truly compelled to share the images you get in e-mail passarounds or find while browsing the Web, paste them into a blog entry, give credit to the creator (or at least list where you found them), and add any remarks you have to make on the images. That keeps them out of the image gallery, where they shouldn't be posted in the first place. Thanks for understanding. And if you've got some really good original photos, you might consider entering them in the weekly photo contest. This week's theme is It Keeps You Runnin'.

Yes, things are kinda goofy around here today

Maybe I should have given you advanced warning, because I was 98 percent sure this was going to happen. But a girl can dream that a software update will go smoothly, right?
Our software developer did a release today that is going to allow us to make some very cool changes to the site in the near future. Unfortunately, rolling out a major update often has some side effects. The site seems to be functioning normally right now with the exception of photos and avatars. They are hit-and-miss on whether they will load or not. And things seem to be going a little slow (at least on my computer). If you spot any bugs, kinks or gigantic potholes in Quadsville, please let me know by commenting on this blog or e-mailing support@qctimes.com. We are working to have everything back to normal very soon. Comments on qctimes.com (since they are powered by Quadsville) were also affected this morning, but seem to be doing fine now. We have been working hard, too, on the intermittent problems comments have been having the last month or so, where they will all of a sudden disappear or you get an error message when trying to post. We are getting close to figuring out what's causing it and putting a fix in. In the meantime, srm did some trial-and-error testing and thinks if you keep your posts under 1500 characters, you should be fine. As for the sudden disappearance of the comments, wait 5 minutes, refresh, and usually they magically reappear. Thanks for your patience as we undergo these growing pains. It will all be better in the long run!

Question of the Day: What's the ideal Bix 7 weather?
Posted by: Michael Donnelly at 4:35PM CST on July 21, 2009
Mayor Melissa's stuck in meetings all afternoon, so I'm your 'Question' host for the day.
The early weather forecast for Bix 7 Saturday is calling for rain, so we ask: What's the ideal weather to run seven miles up and down hills in?
Posted by: Melissa C at 1:16PM CST on July 21, 2009
I just learned that all of our Bix coverage - the race, the Street Fest and the Jazz Festival - will be collected in one handy-dandy place: http://qctimes.com/app/special/bix/
There are already lots of stories there. Plus, you can go back and pull up stories from previous years. There's also:

A weekend of gardening, trainspotting
Posted by: Melissa C at 12:34PM CST on July 20, 2009
I'm really enjoying everyone's weekend blog entries. Lots of photos and even recipes for homemade marinara and pesto sauces (thanks, alertreader!).
Breyernut was in Savanna to watch a steam engine come through town. She's got a link to her slide show from the event. It's a must-see for train enthusiasts. NewlyWoodwards and srm posted some garden updates with photos, including some cute ideas for improvised bud vases to show off your cut flowers. I was happy to find several entries in the "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" photo contest waiting for approval this morning, too. (Don't worry, fellas. You get your chance to shine the first week of August with a "Let's Hear it for the Boy" theme). Make sure you have your camera with you this Saturday so you can snap a good shot for next week's contest: "It Keeps You Runnin'." Speaking of, are you read to run this weekend?! I so need to get in a few miles today or tomorrow. I haven't run for 2 weeks! Life has gotten so busy all of a sudden (I guess that's what I get for taking a week off for vacation). Anyone bringing the kids to Jr. Bix? My redhead will be racing. She doesn't remember the bounce houses or popsicles or hotdogs from 2 years ago when she ran ---just the running. Now that's a focused competitor! ;-)

Which Harry Potter movie is your favorite?

I'm generally pretty good at rolling with the changes. I've adjusted to calling John O' Donnell Stadium Modern Woodmen Park. I refer to the arena in Moline as the i wireless Center 90 percent of the time. I even say Avenue of the Cities.
But changing the name of the Sears Tower?!?! I'm not sure how smooth that transition is going to be. Chicagoans interviewed for the Associated Press story said they would still call it the Sears Tower, even though it will be officially renamed the Willis Tower today in honor of the new tenant, Willis Group Holdings, a British firm. A spokesman for Willis said, "Skyscrapers are really buildings that are about money. Naming rights are an asset of the building. They can be turned into money and that's what the new owners are doing." But to many people, the Sears -- er, Willis -- Tower is more than a skyscraper. It's a landmark. A part of the civic memory and skyline of one of the Midwest's biggest cities. Changing the name somehow leaves a void. What do you think?

BACKGROUND: The last thing you want to have happen after a day of fun at a festival or an evening of socializing at the pub is to walk back to your car and find it's not there. Apparently, that happens a lot in downtown Davenport when people park in private lots, either not realizing they are private or not believing that towing is enforced. Davenport Mayor Bill Gluba says it's not only enforced, the tow truck companies sit and wait to pounce on offenders and won't unhook their cars if they return while the tow is in progress. Add fairly high towing fees and you've got some disgruntled downtown patrons. So, the city's legal department, at the request of aldermen, has drafted a "non-consensual" tow ordinance that sets a maximum fee of $100 for cars and $120 for vehicles requiring a flatbed truck, which can be charged by any licensed tow operator in the city. Which leads us to ask...

As if this poll was not already more fun than you can vacuum pack into a 3"x5" tin, I've included the Monty Python video below so you don't have to lose the precious 20 seconds it would have taken you to find it on YouTube yourself. You're welcome.

Helloooo, Quadsville!
Posted by: Melissa C at 11:15AM CST on July 13, 2009
I'm back from
vacation and happy to report I survived two 17-hour car rides with my
7-year-old. Turns out she's a good little road-tripper as long as she has the
backseat to herself. My car almost made it to South Carolina and back unscathed.
But a rock flew off an overpass in Normal, Ill., on our way back and left a nice
nickel-sized pock mark in my windshield. :-/
Any good/bad/funny
vacation tales to share?
I spent the week at
my parents' new home with all my siblings and was completely enclosed in the
vacation bubble. No e-mail, no news, no social networks (it's true - I even
stayed off Facebook and Twitter). So, I'm running to catch up today.
Found out my mayor
is gonna get drawn out of a hat (?!?!?). Have read/skimmed through the majority
of your posts from the last week. Looks like you've all been busy, whether with
work and home or busy getting some R&R, like me.
I also enjoyed
looking through the photos from last week's contest. Congrats, again, to the
winners. The next round is under way: "Summertime Blues." As usual, submit by
Wednesday at noon.
I'll be back this
evening with a new Question of the Day for you. In the meantime, you can take
the weekend poll if you haven't already.

As most of you know by now, the Rock Island mayor's race between Dennis Pauley and David Levin has been ruled a tie by Judge Mark VandeWiele. So today's Question of the Day asks how would break that tie?
Posted by: Stephanie De Pasquale at 12:06PM CST on July 9, 2009
Sorry I abandoned you all yesterday and didn't post anything. I was feeling
a bit under the weather, but thanks to a lovely antibiotic, I am now feeling
much better.
The Quadsville highlights from yesterday and today include a funny blog by Baldus Chronicle suggesting an alternative method to decide the winner of the Rock Island mayoral race, which is tied per a judge's ruling on Wednesday. That just goes to show you that every vote counts. Make sure to add your tie-breaking solution to the list. The moist weather we've had is probably very welcome in mbuel's garden. She's continuing to fight off deer and Japanese beetles, but her tomatoes are doing great. I know a lot of you are gardening this year. How are your gardens growing? And don't forgot to vote in the weekly photo contest before noon on Friday. This week's theme is "Stars & Stripes Forever," and we have lots of patriotic pictures from which to choose.

Look, I figured out how to post to the Quadsville Council bulletins. Well, that's only half true. Stephanie helped me.
Here's today's dreary Question of the Day:
Posted by: Stephanie De Pasquale at 1:14PM CST on July 7, 2009
Quadsville is very quiet today. I'm not sure if it's the comfortable weather or if you all are still recuperating
from the 4th of July, but where did you all go?
Mommy blogger Kay Luna had a busy weekend and has a super-cute story to tell about Babycakes' first experience with fireworks. You can read all about it here. And for those of you whose "children" have four
legs instead of two, photofly has posted pictures of Little Bear, a
greyhound that is available for adoption at Quad-City Greyhound Adoption.

Happy Monday,
Quadsvillagers. I hope you all had a safe and fun holiday. I see from Thursday's poll that the majority of you didn't have to work on Friday,
so I hope it's not too difficult getting back to it after a long weekend.
And as long as we're talking about the 4th of July, this week's photo contest
has a patriotic theme: Stars & Stripes Forever. Man,
does that song title bring back memories of high school band. What memories does
it bring up for you?

Posted by: Melissa C at 3:38PM CST on July 1, 2009
Thanks to everyone who has taken our Quadsville Question of the Day poll. Here's a little more info on how it works:
The Question of the Day will be posted in the late afternoon Monday through Friday. You can vote until 6 p.m. the next day. You can always come back to the poll to check results. Or you can look for them on page A2 of the Quad-City Times. If you have a suggestion for a poll, drop me a line at mcoulter@qctimes.com or leave me a message here in Quadsville. Next week is going to be a busy one in the Quad-Cities with the John Deere Classic in full swing. I, however, will be in South Carolina. Once again, Stephanie De Pasquale will take over as Mayor Pro Tem. But I want to let you know about some JDC-related things happening in Quadsville while I'm gone. Keep an eye on the QCTee Times group for live updates from the John Deere Classic (Heck, if you're a golf fan, you should join the group and bookmark the page!). Craig DeVrieze and our other QCT sports writers will be live blogging during the whole tournament - about 10 hours a day. You can follow along with them and send in your comments and questions. You can also send your comments about the JDC via Twitter. Just use the hashtag #JDCQC. You can send Twitpics, too, with the same hashtag. And if you hit traffic snarls trying to get to or from the TPC at Deere Run, don't forget to tweet that with the #qctraffic hashtag. Only one more day in the office for me this week, so let's all vote on the Splish Splash photo contest now so we have a clear winner. There are some cute photos. |
