Getting married?
Posted by: Mayor Melissa at 5:22PM CST on June 27, 2008
If you are planning your "I Do's" or you know someone who is, click on Weddings on the community page and create a site for your special day. It's free, and it's a place where you can send your guests to find out where you are registered, get maps to the wedding and reception, list your wedding party and post photos and videos of the engagement, dress shopping, showers, etc.

You can even shop local wedding vendors in our Marketplace area and friend the businesses you are using.

Group to watch: Bix or Bust
Posted by: Mayor Melissa at 5:11PM CST on June 27, 2008
I'm getting lots of good running advice and tales of running victory and catastrophe on my Bix or Bust group. You don't have to be running the Bix to join. Maybe the Quad-City Marathon is your thing or the Firecracker Run or Race for the Cure. Whether you run year-round or just when it's nice out (or when you feel like it), we'd love to have you.
How to set up a Group and more
Posted by: Tim D'Avis at 7:54AM CST on June 27, 2008
A few people have asked me how to set up a group, which means we will probably need to make it more obvious over time. We created a video tour of the process, but here's how to do it in a nutshell:

Go to "My Stuff", click on 'Administration' and the find the 'create a group' link on that page.

It's our preference for public groups that you allow all members to post to the group blog, so here's how to do that:

Click on "Group Settings" from your groups administration page, or click on the "change settings" link that appears after creating a group for the first time. At the bottom of the options is the ability to allow group members to post to the blog.

It's a little convoluted, we know - we're working on it.

Need parenting tips?
Posted by: Mayor Melissa at 3:38PM CST on June 26, 2008
There's a good discussion going on Marismom's blog about the different tactics moms and dads take when it comes to disciplining the children. Take a look and add your two cents.

And don't forget, the Q-C Parents group is open to everyone. If you are looking for some input on raising your kids or what to do with the grandchildren for the weekend or even if you just want to brag about your little (or grown) ones, please post! The group has 17 members now. I know there are more parents than that out there in Quadsville. Let's see if we can get to 75 members by the end of the week.

Calling all woodcarvers
Posted by: Mayor Melissa at 9:27AM CST on June 26, 2008
John T Moeller invites the participants of this weekend's International Woodcarvers Congress to post photos of their work and of the weekend on his Chainsaw Art, Wood Adventures & I dunits group.  If you have photos to share, just join the group, then go to My Stuff>>My Photos and upload them under the group heading.

To read the Quad-City Times article about this event, going on through Sunday at the Mississippi Valley Fairgrounds, click here.

How to get your groups talking
Posted by: Mayor Melissa at 8:20PM CST on June 24, 2008
I see lots of new groups out there in Quadsville. Some have quite a few members. But the conversation hasn't really taken off.

Now that you've got a crowd gathered, the best way to get conversation started on your group blog is to ask a question. Put it in the headline and then expand upon it in your post.

For example, the headline of a post in Movies-R-Us could be "First date movie?" if you're looking for the perfect flick to take your crush to.

Use the knowledge and expertise of your fellow QVs to your advantage. Pick their brains! Be in the know.

You joined a group. You've got a topic. Now, talk amongst yourselves!

Basic blogging and posting guidelines for QV - please read
Posted by: Tim D'Avis at 10:49AM CST on June 23, 2008
Hi folks - we'll issue a link to a more official document on this in the near future, but for now I'd like to tackle a few issues that have cropped up in the past few days:

All blog posts, comments, photos and videos must be original works owned by you, unless you have the permission of the original author to re-post. This means you can't just copy and paste someone else's work with a one-line comment on it.

If you're going to make reference to a work, you need to clearly label it as such. Use the "Quote" button on the blog editor to designate quoted material and link back to the original source. You should not be using more than a paragraph or two at most to quote another work.

We need to be mindful of those who create value and dialogue with their words and images. The best form of payment for reporters, bloggers and other creators out there is a notice and a link back to their work.

If you do have the permission to re-post material, denote that in your citations.

Hit me with some questions and points in need of clarification in the comments. Thanks!

Group to watch: Senseless Signs
Posted by: Mayor Melissa at 9:48AM CST on June 23, 2008
Senseless Signs in the Quad-Cities is a watchdog group where you can submit photos or blog about signs you've see that are outdated, incorrect and generally give a bad impression of our community.
Editorial Page Editor Mark Ridolfi started this group in conjunction with a series of editorials the Times is running on signs in the QC that should have been taken down long ago.

In a follow up to Melissa's earlier post - we've got six more videos from John C Anderson of Silvis.

The video posts also make mention of his YouTube presence. Please support Quadsville's first bona-fide micro-celebrity.

Great discussion on military officers

There's a great, in-depth conversation happening on the National Security & Foreign Policy blog in response to "The Case of Admiral Fallon." Check it out here.

New video: Perspective on the Future
Posted by: Mayor Melissa at 4:50PM CST on June 19, 2008
Just watched an interesting video on Fly on the Wall's National Security & Foreign Policy blog.

It's long, so give yourself 8 minutes or so. And it will make your head spin. It puts in perspective the amount of information coming at us each day and where the U.S. fits in with the world in population and education trends.

Introducing the Quadsville Council
Posted by: Mayor Melissa at 1:30PM CST on June 19, 2008
As Mayor of Quadsville, it is my pleasure to introduce to you the Quadsville Council. This group of individuals will be helping me keep an eye on all areas of our virtual community, keeping its streets clean and pointing out acts of good citizenship. You'll recognize them from qctimes.com.

The council includes: Teenager, Julie Abdel-Fattah, John T Moeller, Anne-Marie Hislop, Fly on the Wall, Penelope, RiverCity Rose, David, QuadCityImages and editors and online staff at the Quad-City Times.

This group will likely expand, so if you're interested in joining this Council/Neighborhood Watch Group, feel free to campaign on your blogs!

Group to Watch: Words from our Warriors
Posted by: Mayor Melissa at 11:04AM CST on June 17, 2008
John T Moeller started this group a few days ago. He describes it as "A place to tell us what you are fighting for or did if you are a Veteran who held up your hand in peacetime or while our Nation is /was at war."

I know we have several current and former military people here in Quadsville. Please tell us your stories. As the sister of a West Point cadet, I'm curious about how other people made the decision to join.

Flood photos
Posted by: Mayor Melissa at 10:56AM CST on June 17, 2008
Thanks to Jenius, QuadCityImages and Andy Erickson for posting flood photos. Want to see them? Click on Community>>Photos, then click FLOOD in the tag cloud at the top of the page.

Any flooding in your neighborhood? Share you photos with us. Remember to add the tag "Flood" to each photo so they're easy to find.

I've got some shots from Oquawka, Ill., and of our parking lot at the Times building that I'll share shortly!

What should we call ourselves?
Posted by: Mayor Melissa at 4:04PM CST on June 9, 2008
I was so pleased to come into work today after a Web-free weekend and see three new groups and several new blog entries from fellow ... people on Quadsville.

Alright - what are we going to call ourselves? Quadsvillers? Quadsvillians? I kinda like Quadsvillains (as in chillin' like a Quadsvillain). ;-) Quadsvillites? Quadies?

Please share all your brilliant ideas.

Thanks for coming to the convention!
Posted by: Mayor Melissa at 5:42PM CST on June 6, 2008
We had a great time last night at Commenter Convention 2.0. Attending in person were John T Moeller, Teenager, Julie Abdel-Fattah, Anne-Marie Hislop, RiverCity Rose and Mike Olson. I had met all but the last two before. Mike & Rose - It was great to put faces to comments. Rose isn't lying - she really does resemble Stevie Nicks!

We also had several virtual attendees who kept up with the goings on via live chat. Thanks to Jim Gale for keeping that end of the conversation going. RA, Fly on the Wall, Reuther, Sanity and Kurt were all there. Sanity showed off multitasking skills by playing Guitar Hero III while live chatting. :-) And I'm looking forward to seeing the "Fly Papers" on Quadsville.

Overall, everyone's impression of Quadsville was favorable. In fact, people seem to be downright excited. Especially about being able to have sidebar conversations with specific people.

Thanks to all of you for helping out with the Quadsville testing. If you want to read the live blog, it's available for replay at www.qctimes.com/convention. Sorry, there's no instant replay of what happened in the auditorium at the Times. You'll just have to use your imagination.

Posted by: Tim D'Avis at 5:35PM CST on June 5, 2008
If you haven't already, hop on over to Brian Wellner's Penny Pinchers group. Gather and share ideas on how to save money and tighten your belt - the best ideas will end up in an upcoming edition of the Times.
What's your favorite part of Quadsville?
Posted by: Mayor Melissa at 5:33PM CST on June 5, 2008
Some people have already confessed to me that they are "addicted" to Quadsville. :-) What parts do you like best? What needs some work? Please give us honest feedback. We are working to make this the best virtual community it can be.
Commenter Convention 2.0
Posted by: Mayor Melissa at 5:32PM CST on June 5, 2008
Our second Commenter Convention is about to start. I'm looking forward to seeing some returning faces and meeting new people. I'm also excited to see what they think of Quadsville. Thanks in advance to our in person and virtual attendees for jumping in to Quadsville during the testing phase and trying it out.
Where the Quad-Cities become one
Posted by: Mayor Melissa at 5:03PM CST on June 5, 2008
It may never happen in real life, but here on Quadsville, our entire community is presided over by one mayor and council. I'm honored to serve as the first Mayor of Quadsville and am excited to get to know its citizens.

Our first council will be appointed soon. I will introduce them to you in the coming weeks. In the meantime, enjoy exploring the site and making new connections online that enhance your real life.
