Weekend poll: Paper, plastic or canvas?
Posted by: Mayor Melissa at 10:43AM CST on February 26, 2010
I love my canvas totes so much I can't imagine how plastic grocery sacks ever gained such popularity. I see more and more people using reusable bags, and not just at grocery stores. With chains like Target and Kohl's offering their own reusable bags - usually for less than $2 - it's hard to go to a store without noticing this green option.

But plastic is still prevalent and paper bags have fans, too.

Which do you use most often?

Question of the Day: Do you plan to get the H1N1 vaccine?
Posted by: Mayor Melissa at 4:02PM CST on February 25, 2010
Not only is the H1N1 vaccine now readily available in the Quad-Cities, it's practically being given away. Our workplace is offering free vaccines now that the supply is so bounteous that the shot is available to anyone who wants one.

But isn't flu season almost over? I know it carries well into spring, especially if temperatures are below average. But since we now know the H1N1 flu strain was not as devastating as conjectured, will there be enough people rolling up their sleeves to get rid of the overstocked vaccine?

Are you getting the shot?

Question of the Day: Which generation do you call your own?
Posted by: Mayor Melissa at 12:57PM CST on February 24, 2010
The Pew Research Center has developed an interesting quiz that rates how closely you identify with the Millennials. That's the generation born after 1980. I scored an 87, putting me in the middle of the Millennial range, even though, technically, I'm a GenX-er (1965-1980). As this quiz was passed along today on Twitter, I heard from several others who ranked a generation ahead of what would be considered their own. Maybe I just follow very youthful and progressive people. :-)

It got me thinking, though, about which generation I feel I identify most with. Which generation do you call your own? (It doesn't have to be the one designated by your birth year.)

Question of the Day: How likely are you to buy a Toyota?
Posted by: Mayor Melissa at 4:57PM CST on February 23, 2010
After the recent rash of recalls, Toyota PR people are doing a full-court press to ensure their brand doesn't become too tarnished. Maybe you've seen the apology commercials during the Olympic broadcasts.

This is all a Toyota dealer's worst nightmare, and they, too, are scrambling to keep their customers. Meanwhile, there are Congressional hearings going on and lots of speculation about what this mess means for Toyota in the long run.

I note the irony as I listen to daily updates on the radio while driving around in my Prius. I'm not giving up on Toyota because of this, though. Are you?

Question of the Day: Do you use coupons?
Posted by: Mayor Melissa at 12:47PM CST on February 22, 2010
Kay Luna's got another good topic in her Savvy Saver column today: coupon use. It turns out 2009 was the first year coupon use had increased since 1992! I know I've started using coupons more since the economy went south.

Do you use coupons, too?

Weekend poll: Do you wear your pajamas in public?
Posted by: Mayor Melissa at 11:06AM CST on February 19, 2010
Kay Luna's got a great discussion going on her blog about this topic. Apparently there's been a big stir in Great Britain lately about pajama-wearing parents dropping their kids off at school or pajama-clad shoppers shuffling about the grocery store. Some say it's inappropriate and sets a bad example for the kids. Other people don't see what the big deal is.

Today, we'd like to know - Do you wear your pajamas in public?

Question of the Day: Are you giving up something for Lent?
Posted by: Mayor Melissa at 11:29AM CST on February 18, 2010
The season of Lent is upon us. It began on (Ash) Wednesday. This is why you make have seen coworkers or friends with an ash mark on their foreheads that day (or had one yourself) and why restaurants and fast food chains are offering fish specials on Fridays for the next month and a half.

If you are Catholic, you know that, traditionally, the faithful were asked to give up eating meat during Lent. That's been relaxed to giving it up on Fridays these days. But many people also choose other things to forgo during Lent, using it as a time of sacrifice and reflection as Easter approaches.

I'm not Catholic, but I have on many occasions co-opted Lent as a chance to join with friends in abstaining from something, usually something that I consider unhealthy for me. I think this practice - which is found in most major religions - of fasting or breaking a connection with a material want is a good one. This year, I'm giving up coffee and high fructose corn syrup. Yes, that second one requires a lot of label reading, because it's in darn near everything in this country, even bread.

Whether or not it is for religious reasons, are you giving up something for Lent? Tell us what it is in the comments. What do you think of this practice?

Question of the Day: Should marijuana be legalized?
Posted by: Mayor Melissa at 1:25PM CST on February 17, 2010
The Iowa Board of Pharmacy voted today to recommend to the state legislature that they reclassify marijuana and appoint a task force to study medical use of the drug. Times Des Moines bureau chief Charlotte Eby has a story here.

Do you think marijuana should be legalized?

Side topic for comments: Anyone see "Reefer Madness" (either the original "educational" film or the movie made of the musical it inspired)? Both are fairly entertaining. Also interesting is the special feature on the musical DVD about how the paper industry was involved in the original movie as part of an effort to sink the competing hemp industry, hemp being a fiber also used to make paper, clothing, etc.

Discuss!

Question of the Day: Should Scott County enact a 'social hosting' law?
Posted by: Mayor Melissa at 4:44PM CST on February 16, 2010
The Scott County Board is considering making it a civil offense for someone to knowingly allow minors to consume alcohol on their property. For example, you know your kids are having a kegger in your cornfield. You didn't buy the beer; they procured it on their own. But you don't stop the party from happening.

The fines would range from $500 for first offense to $1,000 for multiple offenses.

I'm interested in the poll results, but I'm more interested in discussion here. You can read Kurt Allemeier's full story on the topic here.I find it very interesting that LeClaire voted a similar ordinance down and Eldridge seemed to have little interest in pursuing the issue.

Do you think this is a good safety measure or do you think it is overkill? Would you let your kids and their friends drink on your property? I had friends in high school whose parents did allow that, but keys were collected and everyone slept over/camped out. Lots to debate here. Let's get it started.

Question of the Day: Should Illinois raise coroner fees?
Posted by: Mayor Melissa at 4:49PM CST on February 15, 2010
The Illinois Senate is scheduled to debate this Wednesday in committee, so it's still a ways away from becoming law. The main proposed fee increases:

Toxicology report - Now: $15 ...... Proposed: $25

Cremation permit - Now: $10 ...... Proposed: $50

Coroner's jury transcript - Now: $3/page ...... Proposed: $5/page

Autopsy report - Now: $30 ....... Proposed: $50

Sen. Gary Forby, D-Benton, is pushing the measure. He says some fees haven't been raised in 20 years and are not in line with inflation. I'm just fascinated to see what these things cost. How about you?

Do you think Illinois should raise these fees?

Next meet-up set for Monday, Feb. 22
Posted by: Mayor Melissa at 12:34PM CST on February 15, 2010
The next meet-up/tweet-up is slated for 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 22 at Front Street Brewery in downtown Davenport. We'll likely angle for a large table on the River Drive side, so look for us there. Parking is available on Perry Street or in the lot across from Front Street on the river side of River Drive.

If you've never been to Front Street, they are one of our local breweries with several tasty ales brewed on site. They have a vanilla porter on tap right now that is quite tasty. Their menu is also fab. Besides pub fare, they have a signature French onion soup that's delicious, several salads and dinner items from the grille.

I hope we have a great crowd. The last meet-up was an amazing success. Looking for a repeat. You can RSVP to the twtvite here or in the comments below. See you soon.

Weekend Poll: Which Winter Olympic events will you watch?
Posted by: Mayor Melissa at 2:52PM CST on February 12, 2010
The opening ceremony is tonight (Friday) and then it's game on in Vancouver for all sorts of winter sporting competitions. I hear the luge track is one of the most dangerous in the world. Several people have already crashed in training runs and at least one has died.

I'm not sure how much of the Olympics I'll watch, but I have fond memories of watching the Winter Olympics as a kid, especially the figure skating events. I always liked the Winter Olympics better than the Summer Olympics. Maybe that was because I watched more TV in the winter as a kid and was always outside playing during the summer, so I didn't connect with the summer games. Actually, my only memory of watching the Summer Olympics as a kid was one time when I was sick with a stomach bug and I watched some track events. So, there you have it.

Which Winter Olympic events will you be watching? Or are you more of a Summer Olympics fan?

Question of the Day: Who's your Valentine?
Posted by: Mayor Melissa at 5:04PM CST on February 11, 2010
Any of you with grade-school age kids have likely spent this week helping them assemble Valentine's Day cards for their classmates. I kind of miss that - carefully separating the cards, attaching stickers or suckers or little bags of candy hearts, and then (the toughest part) deciding which valentines went to which classmates. I mean, you didn't want to give one that was too lovey-dovey to the kid who picked on you. But what an opportunity this was to show your crush object you liked them in a way that didn't involve chasing them around the playground or pulling their hair.

I have one coworker who brings a smile to my face every year with one of those little box-of-32 paper valentines tucked into my mailbox. She gives them out to the whole newsroom. It makes me feel like playing freeze tag again.

As we get older, though, Valentine's Day is one holiday that sometimes falls along the wayside or gets categorized as a "Hallmark holiday" not really worth spending money on. Do you still celebrate it? Is it just for you and your sweetheart these days? Or do you still pass out valentines to the whole gang?

Who knew we had so many rock stars in the Q-C?
Posted by: Mayor Melissa at 11:02AM CST on February 11, 2010
David Burke blogged about this the other day, but if you missed it, you must take three minutes to watch this video. It is worth it for the guy in the truck alone (who is that?!?!?).

Question of the Day: When does middle age begin?
Posted by: Mayor Melissa at 3:57PM CST on February 10, 2010
I'm not sure what the genesis of this poll question was. My colleagues are great about suggesting poll topics and this one came my way a few days ago. Perhaps there was a water cooler argument over when middle age begins. Perhaps someone stumbled across a story or study about our age perceptions. Or maybe someone just had a birthday (there are a lot of them in January and February here in the newsroom).

Regardless, it's a good discussion to start.

When does middle age begin?

Question of the Day: What's your favorite soc-net slang for snowstorm?
Posted by: Mayor Melissa at 12:23PM CST on February 9, 2010
Many East Coast tweets this past week have included hashtags like #snowpocalypse or #snowmaggedon or #SNOMG!

While I'm still a fan of the local #DeathStorm2010 tag on dramatic postings about our Midwest winter weather, I am much amused by new slang for snow as it accumulates.

Which of these tongue-in-cheek terms is your favorite? (And please add to the list!)

Question of the Day: Which Super Bowl ad was your favorite?
Posted by: Mayor Melissa at 3:20PM CST on February 8, 2010
Anyone else think it was an off year for Super Bowl ads? Not a lot of truly memorable, pop culture shifting spots last night. Thank goodness the game was great, especially the second half.

MediaCurves.com surveys thousands of people online during the game about their reactions to Super Bowl ads and then ranks them on their site. You can find their list here (and watch any commercials you missed).

Which ad was your favorite? The choices below reflect the top six ads according to MediaCurves, plus the ad I've heard the most about at the water cooler and on Twitter. And if you were wondering how that Letterman spot came to be, the New York Times has the answer.

After you vote for your favorite, tell us what the worst commercial was. For me, it's a toss-up between all the Denny's spots with screaming chickens (although you can bet I'll be getting a free Grand Slam tomorrow) and all those E-Trade commercials with the talking babies.

Family Photo Contest winners
Posted by: Mayor Melissa at 12:28PM CST on February 5, 2010
One quality shone in all the photos submitted to this month’s Family Photo Contest: love.
Hope Clark of Clinton, Iowa, won the Quadsvillagers’ Choice Award for her photo, “Daddy’s Hands."
“I took this photo right after the birth of my nephew,” she wrote. “He is holding on to my brother’s hand.”

The Mayor’s Choice Award went to Jason Pawloski of Eldridge, Iowa, for “Through His Eyes.”
“I had several great ideas for this month’s photo contest and was trying to decide which one to use,” Jason wrote. “Then I saw this picture my 4-year-old drew. Suddenly Daddy’s ideas weren’t all that great.”

That child’s perspective is also present in the next photo, an honorable mention submitted by Cheryl Draeger of Davenport.
“My 5-year-old niece, Ariana Lamb, took this picture,” Cheryl wrote, “and her proud mother, Amber Lamb, is in the center with the big toothy smile!”
You can tell who is the center of Ariana’s world.

Another honorable mention goes to Carla Secoy of Davenport for a photo capturing three generations.
“I was always called ‘Momma Duck’ by our oldest daughter,” Carla wrote. “This picture is of our three daughters, granddaughter and grandson (so I guess that also makes me ‘Grandma Duck’).”

The laughter in Christie Fritsch’s honorable mention photo is contagious.
“It was my dad’s birthday and all the birthday cards he received had dogs on them,” the Moline woman wrote. “My sister was laughing so hard.”

With Times Photo Editor Kevin Schmidt on vacation, newsroom artist Joe Kelley filled in as our final judge. The Joe’s Pick Award goes to Michelle Ash of East Moline for her photo, “A Walk.”
“My husband was walking down our drive with our 1-year-old,” she wrote. “These prints are priceless to me.”
Joe appreciated the non-traditional story-telling in this image. “We have all seen footprints in the snow,” he wrote, “but few of us think to use the image to illustrate the bond between father and child.”

Weekend Poll: What's your favorite part of the Super Bowl?
Posted by: Mayor Melissa at 9:49AM CST on February 5, 2010
I have been invited to Super Bowl parties and I have been invited to Super Bowl Commercial parties. While many Americans do use the Super Bowl as an excuse to get together with friends, eat, drink and have a good time, not everyone is there for the football.

I've also heard some ladies take this opportunity to do a Girls Evening Out while the men are occupied with the pig skin. Then again, not all guys will be glued to the TV this Sunday, either.

Tell me about your Super Bowl (or anti-Super Bowl) plans. And vote for your favorite part of the event.

Question of the Day: How often do you vote?
Posted by: Mayor Melissa at 3:47PM CST on February 4, 2010
No, not in the Chicago "vote-early-and-often" sense. I mean, do you only go for general elections or do you show up for primaries and school board elections and all those other opportunities to vote?

I realized on Tuesday, as I headed out to vote in Illinois' primary, that I vote pretty much every chance I get. But it wasn't always that way. I didn't vote in anything other than a presidential election until my mid-20s. I didn't vote in a primary until my late-20s.

Did you go through a similar "citizenship puberty?"

On which occasions do you go to the polls? Check all that apply.

Question of the Day: Did LaHood go too far with Toyota remarks?
Posted by: Mayor Melissa at 4:21PM CST on February 3, 2010
Stop driving your Toyota immediately! Well, you can drive it, but only if you are driving it to the dealer to get repaired! Or, if you haven't experienced any problems with your accelerator ... ???? Um...

It's a good thing my vehicle is not part of this Toyota recall for a potentially sticky accelerator. Transportation Sec. Ray LaHood has been in the news today for saying owners of the affected vehicles should stop driving them immediately. He later softened his advice, saying they should just schedule repairs.

Do you think LaHood went too far? Is your vehicle on the recall list? Tell us what you're planning to do and what your experience has been with this recall below.

Question of the Day: Are we in for 6 more weeks of winter?
Posted by: Mayor Melissa at 10:13AM CST on February 2, 2010
Punxsutawney Phil says we are. Well, he didn't actually say it. He saw his shadow ... which I would think would be hard not to see with all those flash bulbs going off around his humble hole in Pennsylvania. I'm just waiting for Phil to bite the crap out of the hand of the person who pulls him out of his warm hibernation to make his annual "prediction." If someone woke me up from my long winter's nap, you bet I'd make sure they were cursed with snow and ice and freezing fog and other things to make their lives miserable.

Now, in Alaska, they don't have many groundhogs, so today is Marmot Day. No robotic groundhogs for them! They don't expect their marmots to predict the weather, but if those guys wanna compete with their furry brethren in the 48 states, one of 'em better hold a press conference, and soon.

Since this poll is just as scientific as Phil's grand predictions, I put it to you, Quadsvillagers: What does the weather have in store for us during the next six weeks?

Question of the Day: Who gave the best performance at the Grammys?
Posted by: Mayor Melissa at 4:55PM CST on February 1, 2010
Did you watch the Grammy Awards?

I didn't. But I caught a few clips on the morning TV talk shows today. Some wild performances, looked like.

Who do you think gave the best performance? Let us know what swayed your decision (and let me know which performances are YouTube must-views).
