No politics allowed
Posted by: Melissa C on October 27, 2008 at 2:33PM CST
My step-mom runs a restaurant in Stronghurst, Ill., a tiny town south of the Quad-Cities. She told me this weekend that she has put a sign on her door that reads "No Politics Allowed."

Apparently, the political discussions were getting too heated in her diner and driving away customers. She said patrons were yelling at each other, swearing and pointing fingers as they argued over who was the better presidential candidate. The final straw was when a first-time customer told her as he paid his bill that he loved the food and the prices, but he'd never be back because of the behavior of the other customers.

The worst offenders have taken umbrage at the ban on political debate, saying their First Amendment rights are being trampled. But Carla refuses to budge, saying they are cutting into her bottom line. And besides, she says, nobody's going to change anyone's mind on the subject anyway.

Have you heard of this happening in other restaurants or bars in the Quad-City area?

This crowd is familiar with all those locales, Red. :-) Oquawka and Keithsburg are only a hop, skip and a jump away from Stronghurst.

I haven't heard of this, but must say that as the year moved closer and closer to the election, I have felt less and less interested in voting.

I think that if all people acted as childish as the people running for office our world would be one awful mess. I think that the two major contenders this election have successfully made us look bad to other countries.

It's makes me both angry and sad.

I cant believe in a nation as large as we are that we couldnt come up with a decent candidate.

I hope she is not one that will have to spread the wealth, there might be a new sign on the door.

All joking aside ~ Good for her. I like people that go against the current.

themakingof..... the childish aspect of politics is really a reflection of the society that supports it. Sad, I know...
