Too many projects, not enough time
Posted by: Stephanie De Pasquale on January 23, 2009 at 4:10PM CST
I have all the fabric for eight quilt projects, plus I'm still hand quilting the chief on the Illini quilt I made my fiance for Christmas, yet I can't stop buying fabric.

Last night on the way home from work I stopped by the fabric store, and while I didn't get any quilting fabric, I did pick up material to make a dress I had a pattern for. I've never successfully made clothing, so this will be an adventure.

Unfortunately I found out when I got home that while I'm a size two or four in store brand sizes, I'm a 14 when it comes to Vogue patterns. The pattern only goes up to size 10, which will probably fit my sister, so I'm going to get her measurements and make it for her.

Do any of you have this problem, piles of fabric sitting around your house and not enough time to get to all of them?

Don't trust the sizing you read on the patterns. If you are a size 2 or 4 in the stores, it isn't likely you will go over a size 6 in your pattern. I'm not sure what they use to measure, but I think it's their knuckles. All patterns will give you places to lengthen or shorten, if that's a problem. If your willing to experiment and waste some very precious time, try making the dress in fabric you don't mind destroying. Then you will have a better idea what the numbers really mean for you, personally. The direction of your thickness changes the size. What I mean is this: a person built thick, often, can wear a smaller size than someone of the same measurement that's built wide. The first couple projects can be frustrating until you figure it out.

That's good advice. I might go buy some muslin to try it out with first. Because it's not very fun to cut out fabric for a size 14.

It even less fun to believe as a size 2 or 4 you would need a size 14.

I know. Vogue's measurements must be for supermodels. I mean really, who has a 22 inch waist (which is what you need to have to fit into the size four)?

Scarey, isn't it.

I have a quilt I started when my daughter was a year old, she will be 48 this year and its still not finished. I am the queen of procrastination.

That's how I was with my first one. I bought the fabric at the beginning of 2007 and didn't finish it until last summer. It was really small too. Now I fly through projects.
