I've graduated to real quilt shops
Posted by: Stephanie De Pasquale on January 29, 2009 at 2:13PM CST
In the year or so I've been quilting I've been going to chain stores to get my fabric. But I finally made a trip to some local quilting stores and I don't think I'm every going back to a chain store again.

I went to Quilts by the Oz and the Quilt Basket. They’re both on Avenue of the Cities in Moline and East Moline respectively. The fabric selection alone is practically overwhelming. There are hundreds of bolts of beautiful fabric that I could tell just by touching them were much a better quality than what I’ve been working with.

I was also amazed by the selection of prints and colors to chose from. I’ve been disappointed many times as I went to the store to pick out fabric for baby quilts, but found myself imagining all the different projects I could make with the adorable children’s fabrics available at the shops.

I even picked up fabric of fish hooks that I’m going to use to make a lap quilt for my grandpa who goes fishing every chance he gets. I really had to restrain myself to only buy fabric for the lap quilt, a table runner and a few more Illini-themed projects. Pardon the pun, but I’m hooked.

I saw their Web site. I'm a little afraid to go to any more in the near future. I don't think my bank account can handle it. :)

I feel like a kid in a candy store.

Country Woods and Crafts has nice fabric. It's next to Biaggi's...

Stephanie..I'll try to post a pic of my wedding quilt....everyone at our reception wrong good wishes (and some drunk ramblings) on quilt pieces and my mom made us a gorgeous quilt.

Maris mom - What a great idea! I just found a pattern online for a signature quilt: http://www.mccallsquilting.com/curiss/wb804_sigpattern/. I'm going to make up one quilt block for each of my guests and have them sign it. I of course will wait to put them all together until after the wedding.

Be careful it won't be ling and you will be a fabricholic. There are great quilt shops all over. I was in a great one in Indiana. I just walked around touching all the fabric. I spent my day quilting 3 quilts. One was a T shirt quilt.

I plan to spend all day Saturday quilting. I'm taking a break from the hand quilting to make some Valentines Day place mats. In a week and a half I'll be off for two weeks and plan to spend my time finishing wedding planning and quilting.

Annienet - what kind of T-shirts are you using? I was thinking about making one from all my T-shirts from high school that I don't use anymore, but don't want to throw away.

Just any tshirt with a design. You just cut into a square and add sashing to it and before long you will have a quilt top.
