You need the following fabric for four place mats: 1 panel that has motifs that measure 7” x 7” 1/2 yard dark red 2/3 yard pink 1 1/2 yards white (I only had 1 yard which I used for my backing as well. I just barely had enough, hence recommending buying an extra half a yard.) 1 yard batting ![]() Here are the directions, (all of the seams are 1/4" and should be pressed as you sew): Cut panels into 7” squares including the red border. Cut 8, 3 1/2” x 13” strips and 8, 3 1/2” x 7” strips from the pink fabric. (I found it more economical to cut the 13” strips first and use the remaining fabric to cut a 7” strip.) Sew the 7" strips to the right and left sides of the panel and the 13" strips to the top and bottom. Lay a square ruler at an angle on the block (I used by 12 1/2 inch square) and cut a block that measures 10 1/2” x 10 1/2”. Cut 8, 1 1/2” x 10 1/2” strips from the red fabric and sew them to the right and left sides of the block. Cut 8, 10 1/2” by 3 3/4” strips of the white fabric and sew them to the right and left sides of the place mat. Cut 8, 2” strips of the red fabric to match your measurement for the top and bottom of the place mat and sew them in place. Cut 8, 1 1/2” strips of the red fabric to match your measurement for the right and left sides of the place mat and sew them in place. Cut the batting and backing to be six inches wider and longer than the place mat. Layer and baste. Quilt and bind with the pink fabric to finish. I quilted in the ditch, but you can do any design. This project is very easy and quick. I cut, sewed and quilted the place mats in one evening and finished the binding while watching a movie.
