What was your favorite CommUniversity course?
Posted by: Melissa C on January 5, 2009 at 1:42PM CST
CommUniversity kicks off its 2009 classes on Sunday, Feb. 1. I joined the CommU board this year and am teaching a class for the first time: Civic Media. I'm excited about this, but wishing I could clone myself so I could take a few of the other classes.

If you're not familiar with CommU, it's an opportunity for any community member to take a class on four Sundays (or two, if it's a short class) in February for just $25 (or $15 for the 2-week classes). The courses are taught by area professors and professionals and all fall into one of five categories: Theology and Church Life; Arts and Humanities, Personal Enrichment, Regional Studies and Public Affairs.

You can learn about everything from emerging infectious diseases to Celtic spirituality to digital scrapbooking  to the history of the European Union. St. Ambrose University is the host for the classes.

You can get the course listings and registration form here. I'm sure a few of the life-long learners here in Quadsville are CommU alums. If so, tell us about the classes you took. What classes would you like to see offered next year?

I actually took a couple classes there a few years ago. I took Poetry and Bookbinding. They were both very good, but I would especially recommend the book binding course. We made several books and it was loads of fun!

A great way to get a glimpse of a topic or activity that you may know nothing about.
I took one on world religions, and one on the basics of Tai Chi. This year I'm looking at the one on Africa, the one on photography, and a couple of others - maybe even Irish Social Dancing.
Hard to decide.

Jenius, I have taken Ceili lessons from Pat & Gerry and it's a blast! I haven't done it for awhile though, because I wasn't around for the Celtic Highland Games this year. :-( So many great courses. I hope we get a lot of people. It's CommU's 30th year.

I might expand my horizons and give it a try.

I've taken 2 courses: my first was a 3-section course co-taught by Roald Tweet and another Augie prof. It was about prose, regional art, and archeology in this area. Fascinating! Lots of local stories, slides, and examples. The 'final' was to write something - an essay or poetry - about the river.

Dr. Tweet started with my example. He called it a poem - didn't rhyme - but it was an example of prosaic beauty.

My most recent was 2008's class on writing things you don't want to...like a complaint letter. It was taught by the head of the writer's group in Bucktown. That was an interesting way to look at a topic for a class.

We're so lucky to have community people who believe in CommU to lend their time and expertise for these often snowy weekends. I'd love to take another course next year.
