Whither Leno, Conan, etc.
Posted by: David Burke at 4:02PM CST on January 8, 2010

To the dismay of almost no one, it sounds like it may be the beginning of the end of "The Jay Leno Show." NBC may announce as soon as this weekend its plans which, according to the New York Times, sounds like a half-hour "Leno" at 10:30, followed by Conan O'Brien's "Tonight Show" at 11 p.m. and Jimmy Fallon's "Late Night" at midnight Central time.

"Leno" has become Option Z in our house. If there's nothing else on that's good, it's time for Jay. Personally I thought Leno was at his best in the days when he'd sub for Johnny Carson on Monday and Tuesday nights -- tweaking the establishment, not so predictable and without the need for the populist hand-shaking with audience members on his appearance.

Likewise, I don't think Conan is as good at the earlier hour. Much like David Letterman's move to an earlier spot, it feels like it has to become part of the mainstream rather than the rebellious spirit of a later-night show. And although it's been said to improve, I haven't found much solace in Jimmy Fallon.

What are your thoughts? Will all the talent stay at NBC or move on? What are your late-night TV habits?

Are you into eBooks?
Posted by: David Burke at 5:40PM CST on January 6, 2010

It was the perfect storm: in the timespan of a week I viewed a friend's Kindle book reader, read stories online about how sales of eBooks were through the roof and heard a lot of discussion on Dwyer and Michaels about the topic.

Now I'd like to do a story about it.

Do you have a Kindle, a Sony Reader or any other of the electronic book devices? Want to talk about it? If so, e-mail me, dburke@qctimes.com, and we can make connections to talk about the phenomenon. Has it replaced physical books for you? Are you addicted to it?

I'd like to hear from you. Thanks.

Fox 18, CW shuffle local programming
Posted by: David Burke at 11:44AM CST on January 6, 2010

KLJB-TV (Fox 18) and KGCW-TV (Quad-Cities CW) make their annual January local programming shuffle, effective next week.
Wendy Williams’ talk show, which had been at 10 a.m. weekdays on Fox 18, moves to the CW at the same time. In its place, Fox 18 is running a pair of “Friends” reruns.
Two episodes of “Street Court,” which had been running at 10 a.m. on the CW, move to 8 and 8:30 a.m. weekdays. That moves “George Lopez” to 5 p.m., and “Malcolm in the Middle” to 1 a.m. “Lopez” and “King of the Hill” will be from 5-6 p.m., moving “Everybody Hates Chris” reruns to 2 and 2:30 p.m., replacing the CW’s afternoon run of Wendy Williams.
Fox 18’s late night will have “King of Queens” at midnight, followed by “Frasier” at 12:30 and 1:30 a.m., sandwiching a rerun of the 9 p.m. news.
In late night on CW, “Scrubs,” “Half and Half” and “Cops” move up a half-hour.

What do YOU want from Q-C arts, entertainment?
Posted by: David Burke at 11:56AM CST on January 4, 2010

My Sunday column, looking for advice from audience and potential audience members:

I’m proclaiming 2010, at least in my own mind-set, the Year of the Audience.
As much as we go on about performers and performances in this space, it’s easy to forget that without someone in the seats to view and/or appreciate them — and, at appropriate moments, pay money to do so — the arts relationship is not complete.
Granted, those relationships can be tumultuous sometimes. If the audience member feels that he or she didn’t get his or her money’s worth, they won’t be coming back after a while. If he or she has other complaints, you — as a performing entity — are in danger of being dumped, and no flowers, chocolates or poetry can save you.
Whenever I seek participation from readers, I usually get some sort of response — but all too often it’s from people within the arts community itself. Since this column is perused by a whopping 13.7 readers, there has to be someone out there who does not have a vested interest in a local arts organization and would be willing to speak their mind about what they’d like to see and experience.
Here are some ideas to get the ball rolling:

  • What would you like to see performed onstage by one of the area’s current theater companies?
  • How about a 6 or 6:30 p.m. showtime rather than 7:30 or 8?
  • Do you feel area art galleries are open for reasonable hours?
  • Would you like more “talk- back” sessions after a performance?
  • Would you like a bit of a preview from the various groups before performances to serve as an explainer?
  • Do you avoid some venues because of parking problems? Their seating? Their sound or the temperature?
  • Do you feel what’s being offered is over your head? Do you feel it’s beneath you?
  • Would you like to see more of a turnover in art gallery shows rather than long exhibitions?
  • Are ticket and admission prices too high for your budget?
  • Do you feel overwhelmed by the number of Friday-Saturday-Sunday performances and would like to see something on, say, a Monday night?
  • Do you feel as though what’s being offered speaks to you? Why or why not?

I think you get the picture. Contact me through e-mail or respond to my blog with a similar message on Quadsville.com and we can get some conversation rolling.
Conversation being, of course, the cornerstone of any good relationship. Or so I’ve heard.

The winner is ... Experience Quad-Cities
Posted by: David Burke at 10:26AM CST on January 29, 2010
The newly formed Quad-Cities Cultural Resource Marketing Center has shortened that mouthful down to Experience Quad-Cities.
The board selected the name Thursday and is, according to its news release, “inclusive and does not specifically refer to any particular segment of arts, culture, heritage or entertainment.”
The Web site domain has been purchased, and plans are being made for a spring State of the Arts event.

That's Sir David to you
Posted by: David Burke at 11:12AM CST on January 26, 2010

No, not me. (There's a sign of the apocalypse right there.)

The new royalty is Sir David Chipperfield, the London architect whose first designs in the United States included the Figge Art Museum in Davenport, followed by work in Des Moines and St. Louis. The 59-year-old was on the list of the Queen's 2010 New Years Honours. (Yes, I did use the British spelling.)

Conan on Fox? KLJB program manager's game
Posted by: David Burke at 4:01PM CST on January 25, 2010

A new late night show with Conan O'Brien on the Fox TV network? You've got John Bain's attention.

"They are talking about it. Everybody says it's a good possibility, and what a great fit," Bain, program manager for KLJB/KGCW said from the floor of the National Association of Television Programming Executives, or NATPE, in Las Vegas on Monday afternoon.

Since O'Brien's final "Tonight Show" on Friday -- and I can never hear "Free Bird" again without thinking of it -- the speculation has begun about where he might land, and Fox seems to be the leading contender.

The only disadvantage, Bain said, were that local stations would lose their programming -- and in turn some of their local ad revenue -- at that hour. (Currently Fox 18 runs two episodes of "The Office" at 10 and 10:30 p.m., followed currently by "My Name is Earl.")

"When the network schedules something, it takes your local real estate, your commercial (time) is less, and that's something to think about," Bain said.

Bain said he's heard various rumors that a Conan show would run at 10, getting a jump start on the network competitors, or 10:30, putting him head-to-head-to-head with Jay Leno and David Letterman.

"If Conan were to end up on Fox, we'd be good affiliates and add it to the schedule," Bain said. "Then you hope he really jumps out of the gate and gets good ratings, and the ratings would make up for less (local ads)."

Bain is at the NATPE convention making deals for shows to run on Fox 18 and the Quad-Cities CW, as well as the rest of the Grant Group of stations, to air in the 2010-11 season. Already he's picked up reruns of "How I Met Your Mother" and "Real Housewives."

All sorts of TV execs and stars were roaming around the hotel, he said. As we were talking, Sugar Ray lead singer Mark McGrath -- who will host a new version of the game show "Don't Forget the Lyrics" this fall -- passed by him on the convention floor.

Globetrotters breaking records at iwC
Posted by: David Burke at 2:30PM CST on January 25, 2010

The Harlem Globetrotters have appeared at the i wireless Center every winter since The Mark of the Quad-Cities opened in the mid-'90s. And judging by a news release I got from the Trotters PR agency last week, there's a darned good reason.

The iwC was one of four arenas in the country (along with Chicago, Cleveland and Cincinnati) to receive golden Spalding basketballs from the team for consecutively breaking attendance records over the years. The Jan. 9 date was the largest crowd yet for a Trotters game.

Whatever the case, we’d like to hear about it and share the story with Quad-City Times readers.
In our Valentine’s Day issue, we’ll help you relate some of the memories attached to your favorite song. Please limit your thoughts to about 100 words and have it to us by Wednesday, Feb. 3.

Great ratings for 'Pickers'
Posted by: David Burke at 9:15AM CST on January 20, 2010

There's great news for "American Pickers," the Quad-City-produced series on cable's History.

The show's debut Monday drew 3.1 million viewers, including 1.6 million in the adults 25-54 demographic. That's the highest-rated premiere on History (I so still want to call it the History Channel, but they've stopped that) since "Ice Road Truckers" in 2007.

Of course it got a lot of buzz around here (can't count how many people have asked me about it in the past month), but it's nice to see it generate a lot of interest nationwide as well.

Local take on Leno: Nice try, NBC
Posted by: David Burke at 11:53AM CST on January 12, 2010

Nice try, NBC.
That sums up the feelings of Mark Antonitis, interim president and general manager of KWQC-TV6, about the five-day-a-week, 9 p.m. “Jay Leno Show,” which was canceled by the network this week.
“I thought NBC did what they needed to do. I thought it was a smart thing to try,” he said.
Now’s the time when network television needs to take chances, the KWQC boss added.
“This is a tough time in the industry, and it takes some bold moves and people willing to experiment,” he said. “And when you’re willing to experiment, you’ve got to be willing to fail.
“You admit it didn’t work out the way it wanted and you go try something else.”
The next step, he said, is to find a way for Leno, Conan O’Brien and Jimmy Fallon to co-exist in NBC’s late-night lineup.
It’s all, Antonitis said, a reward for a loyal company man.
“Leno is the poster child for the best employee anybody could want. The guy’s cooperative, all joking aside at the expenses of his bosses at NBC, but the guy’s a wonderful employee,” he said.
While other NBC stations had noticed a strong dip in their 10 p.m. newscast ratings with Leno as a lead-in, Antonitis said that wasn’t the case with KWQC.
“People will tune to this television station regardless of what’s on (at 9),” he said. “This is a dominant station.”
A former general manager with Young Broadcasting stations in San Francisco and Sioux Falls, S.D., as well as a former news consultant and newsroom boss in Des Moines and Chicago, Antonitis said his time in the interim role is coming to a close and that he’ll soon be leaving KWQC.

With "Avatar" promised sometime later this spring, the Putnam Museum IMAX Theatre is filling the time by bringing back an audience favorite.

It's just up to the audience to determine which one that is.

Voters can go to http://www.putnam.org/imaxpoll.html until Jan. 18 to vote on their choice of "The Dark Knight," "U23D," "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory," "Superman Returns," "I Am Legend" and the original "Night at the Museum."
