Obama in Cairo

Wasn't Obama's message great?

I am delighted with Obama's speech today in Cairo. It is so wonderful to have a president who has the background he has, who can use that experience to try to bridge some chasms that badly need to be bridged.

Although his target audience was the Muslim world, I hope that those of us in the West will also hear his messages about Islam. It is a beautiful religion with many points of common concern with Christianity, Judaism, and other world religions. It has been badly misused by the few, but they are the exception.

Having spent time in Cairo in 1999-2000 doing an internship, I know that most folks there want the things we all want: a good job, a safe place to live, enough extra income for a few luxuries and the ability to get away occasionally, good schools and safe places to play, the chance to speak their minds, and the right to determine their own path in life, good healthcare, and the right to practice their faith as they feel called.

I am pleased that Mr. Obama spoke honestly about the challenges, about the need for all sides to take responsibility, and about the need for a two state solution in Israel-Palestine. He both called on the Palestinians to cease the violence and on Israel to stop the expansion of the settlements.

I know that it is just a speech, that talk is not action, and that accomplishing things is much more difficult than talking big ideas. But I am proud of our president, proud that we elected a man with such a varried life experience who can reach out so well, and proud that he did so with balance and integrety.
