May 16, 2010 yeah, the chart that accompanies the print edition of this piece does solely focus on men as the ones doing the crime. we all know that's usually the case, but not always. i'm no "pc police!" personality, but it kind of struck me as unprofessional.

January 16, 2010 i was on the centennial last night, heading from davenport into rock island, when someone going about 75 mph flew by me and swerved in and out of traffic ahead of me. you know what? we both ended up at the first red light. slow down. slow. down.

September 13, 2009 we need a shift in mindset about the people who often use the skatepark. instead of thinking the good kids down there are the exception to the rule, everyone should know that most skaters and bikers down there are good, and the exceptions are the bad eggs. a little reversal here, please.

August 06, 2009 i never know what to think about such concerts (or rallys, or "sessions," etcetera). i can see a will to want kids to have hope and love in their lives, and i can see how christianity has turned some folks around, but overall the idea behind this still turns me off. when i think about the inconsistencies within the christian framework – an all-loving, all-knowing creator of everything, whom you must accept as your one true god, and if not, you will enter an eternal damnation – the ends (turning bad kids good) don't justify the means. when i see some folks turn their lives around "through christ," i often see a lot of unpleasant side effects. i'd rather have our troubled youths approached in a myriad of other ways – peer mentoring, Big Brothers, Big Sisters, parenting workshops, so on and so forth.

once upon a time, the East Moline force was comprised of a lot of black belts in Tae Kwon Do and HapKiDo. if i recall correctly, the lead teacher and then 5th degree black belt held sessions in that type of training to other cities' forces. i'm not sure if this included the iowa QCs.

July 17, 2009 the show exceeded my expectations. i had forgotten that Amy Cutler was going to be included, and it was a joy to see her painting on paper. by the way, i think it was originally advertised that Elizabeth Peyton would have work in the show, and i did not see her on the walls last night. i have to say i didn't miss her.
