I've worked in downtown Davenport for more than 10 years. I was commuting 35 miles every day and decided that was enough... moved to the west end of town, near Kimberly, in July.

If you want to know more, my blog is alansheaven.blogspot.com Most of the messages here are actually a feed from my blog.

Of course, you could always shoot me an e-mail and ask as well. :-)

Agree with you fully. I stop at that station often on my way to work. I was telling someone just the other day how difficult it is to see when pulling out onto River Drive at that intersection.

I park in the Freight House lot every day for work and so I daydream from time to time about what I would like to see there. Most recently that daydream has been to see the Farmers Market expand through the old Balls and Pucks, and Penguins areas...open the restaurant with a menu and style that matches the market...and open the bar above as something a bit more relaxed that plays off the great view of the river, the park and its proximity to the ballpark. It sounds like the idea being brought back from Detroit is similar... if so, I say give it a try!

Matched set, what's that? I'm on my third house and 25+ years of home ownership and my bedroom set still doesn't match. My dresser was something my wife had before we were married, the base of my bed is from an old waterbed we bought soon after we were married, and I made the shelving unit behind the bed that serves as the headboard. Getting rid of that dresser is on the future "to do" list...I'm building an amoire to take it's place.

Reading your story reminded me of what was probably my worst. I was cutting 2x4s for an outdoor shed. For measurements, I would lay a cut board on top of the uncut one. As I was doing that, the boards slipped off... just as I went to grab them, one end of the bottom board hit the floor sending its opposite end upward, slapping it into the top board. Unfortunately, my thumb was between the boards at the time resulting in, you guessed it, a broken thumb.

I can't speak to baseball, but as the father of a former softball pitcher I can say that the same issues are present in that sport. And it is an issue that has always concerned me. The worst injury I saw from a batted ball was a pitcher who was hit in the chest with a ball. She never had time to react. It broke a rib and punctured her lung. I've always been in favor of changes in the metal bats. First, and a fairly easy one to do, would be to limit the allowed "drop." The drop is the difference in the length of the bat compared to it's weight. A 32-inch bat does not weigh 32 ounces. It is not uncommon for softball bats to have drops in the range of -10, meaning a 32-inch bat only weighs 22 ounces. Bat speed could be slowed down if they simply limited the maximum allowed drop to -5 or less. What I would really like to see is an all-together elimination of the high tech composite bats. For those worried about the cost of wooden bats, I would allow aluminum bats but I would go back to the original models, introduced 20 or more years ago. Those bats were hard, did not have the "springing" effect of current bats and had little to no drop in weight.

I think it's great. I drive that stretch every day to work and back and I've been looking forward to them doing this construction. I'll pay the short-term price of having to go another direction now for the long-term benefit once it's completed.

While there is a big part of me that has little sympathy for someone who breaks the law, there's still something about this that just doesn't hit me the right way. There's a bit of guilty until proven innocent involved here. Certainly, the arrested will have his or her day in court but there is a very definite implication with the posting of these photos that the accused has already been found guilty. Our uniformed finest do a great job but mistakes do happen, and what of the stigma that is now attached to the innocent person who has had their photos posted here for all to see? Beyond that, what of the screen capture images that, in this internet day and age can last for the rest of the innocent person's life? The potential harm to an innocent person may be far greater than the gain of showing the photos of the guilty.

I've been a Vikings fan for more than 40 years. I wish I could argue with you but, sadly, I can't. I am so incredibly upset at all of this that I've thought about hanging up my purple jerseys. This will not only blow up in Childress's face this year... it will also hurt the Vikings in the future. Next year they'll be a year older, Favre will be gone and probably either Jackson or Rosenfels as well, and they'll be no closer to having their quarterback problem solved.

Nice story Alma. It's fascinating that we had such a successful African-American in our area at that particular point in history. I've learned something new today. Thanks.
