Break out the sashes and tiaras -- there's a national beauty pageant coming to the Quad-Cities in December. The American Spirit Pageants will have their preliminaries at the RiverCenter in Davenport on Dec. 2-3 and the finals at the Quad-Cities Waterfront Convention Center in Bettendorf on Saturday, Dec. 4 -- in connection with the VanDerGinst law offices' Holiday Bash, a fundraiser for the HAVLife Foundation. The host for the pageant is Mario Lopez, best known from "Saved by the Bell" and currently the host of the TV magazine "Extra." Wednesday September 1, 2010

Here are the rest of the nominees for the Country Music Association Awards -- Once again notice how many of them have played in the Quad-Cities in the past year or so. Interesting omission -- Carrie Underwood, who won the entertainer of the year award from the rival Academy of Country Music Awards earlier this year is not on the CMA list. She makes her Q-C debut on Oct. 15.

Some of the nominees for the Country Music Association Awards were announced this morning -- the rest, the bigger awards, will be announced Wednesday on "Good Morning America" on ABC. Several of the nominees have passed through the Quad-Cities in the past year or so. Here they are:

It hasn't been heavily advertised as such, but there's a third act in tonight's Toby Keith/Trace Adkins concert at the i wireless Center. It's Jaron and the Long Road to Love (that's the band name), that currently has a country hit with the song "I Pray For You" (the video is here), a kiss-off song that almost becomes a parody of a country song. (The joke comes in every chorus.) The lead singer is Jaron Lowenstein, who -- with his twin brother -- was half of the duo Evan and Jaron, who hit the pop charts several times in the past decade, most notably with the song "Crazy For This Girl," which peaked at No. 15 in 2000. (The duo's debut album has one of the great titles ever: "We've Never Heard of You Either.") Oh, and don't forget the starting time is 7:17 p.m. Seven-seventeen. I don't know why, either. I've asked Toby Keith's publicist several times for an explanation -- all of his concerts on this tour apparently start at that time -- and she didn't have a good explanation either. While you're going to be bombarded with new TV shows from the broadcast networks in a month, the local stations will be making some changes to their weekday and late night lineups. Well, some of them. KWQC-TV6 and WQAD-TV8 will keep their local schedules the same, and WHBF-TV4 is only adding a second run of "Family Feud" at 9 a.m. to replace the canceled "Deal or No Deal." The three other stations -- KLJB-TV18, KGCW-TV26 and WBQD-TV16 -- have more time to fill during the day and are making far more changes. Among the new programs are a combination court and talk show hosted by Headline News talking head Nancy Grace, Oprah Winfrey's favorite designer Nate Berkus and a revival of the game show Don't Forget the Lyrics, as well as reruns of How I Met Your Mother, New Adventures of Old Christine, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Entourage, Real Housewives and Meet the Browns. And WBQD is adding reruns of Dr. Phil to replace the reruns of the WQAD 6 p.m. news. Here are the new lineups, with the programs they're replacing in parentheses. ("x2" means a double-run) KLJB (Fox 18) KGCW (Quad-Cities CW) WBQD (My TV 16) Will that make any changes in anyones' daily or nightly routines??

Tour routing lists that neglect to mention the Quad-Cities don't generate my attention. That is unless it's the tour itinerary of the Trans-Siberian Orchestra, which was released this afternoon. For the first time in eight holiday seasons, the TSO will NOT be stopping at the i wireless Center. Considering that previous interviews I've had with TSO leaders lavish praise on the iwC, it's probably just a year off and not disatisfaction on the TSO or iwC's part. For those needing their TSO fix, the group will be in Omaha, Nov. 3; Des Moines, Nov. 4; Peoria, Nov. 6; and Madison, Nov. 8. Friday July 30, 2010

Too bad I didn't hear about this before the Bix festival last week. Bix Beiderbecke is featured on the soundtrack of the upcoming movie "Get Low." It's set in the 1930s and stars Robert Duvall in the true story of a Tennessee man who throws his own funeral before he dies. The cast of the movie includes SIssy Spacek, Gerald MacRaney, Bill Cobbs and, as the funeral parlor owner who helps Duvall's character with his living funeral, Bill Murray. Here's where the confusion comes in. Some of the listings say the track "I'm Looking Over a Four-Leafed Clover" is by Bix, and others say it's by the Jean Goldkette Orchestra, for which Bix played. But the vocals are done by singer Billy Murray. I initially saw the listings and thought it was the former "SNL" star singing rather than the original performer. Judging by this recording , Murray doesn't begin singing until 2:15 into the 3:17 song. |
